Puppetry

The Puppet Theater Castle

The puppet theater was originally constructed to accommodate both Junior Theater and puppets. During the first year it became obvious that the theater served neither group well. It was too large for puppets and too small for a theater group. It was then converted to house only puppets. When it was first built it had a draw bridge that lowered to expose the stage. Not only was it not waterproof, but the danger of lowering it on an unsuspecting audience member made it necessary to change to a garage-type door.

Three different kinds of puppets are used in the current theater: marionettes, rod puppets and hand puppets. The marionette has jointed limbs that are manipulated from above by attached strings or wires. The second type is the hand puppet manipulated by the simple movement of the puppeteer's hand. During the week days it is necessary to do a one-man puppet show using hand puppets, because of the simplicity of the puppet. The third type of puppet used at Happy Hollow is the rod puppet, a combination of hand manipulation and rods that are attached to the arms and moved from below. However, when there is a full staff, marionettes are used. Shows, puppets and sets are all made right here at Happy Hollow by the Puppeteers.
