The opportunities to capture a national championship and even a conference championship are gone, but several members of the Nebraska football program contend that the desire to finish out the regular season on a winning note is not.

"We've got an awful lot to play for," Nebraska coach Frank Solich said. "We've had a couple of goals that have went by the wayside for us, but there is so much to play for."

The No. 9-ranked Cornhuskers (8-2, 5-2 Big 12) enter today's 11 a.m. game against Colorado (3-7, 3-4) retaining slim hopes of a berth in a Bowl Championship Series bowl. A Nebraska win against the Buffaloes at Lincoln's Memorial Stadium coupled with losses by Notre Dame and/or Virginia Tech on Saturday would certainly improve the Huskers' chances.

"We may be somewhat of a long shot," said Solich, whose team was ranked eighth in the latest BCS standings. "We don't really control it ourselves, but there are certain scenarios that would come into to play that would possibly put us into a BCS bowl game. If not, we certainly want to be in as good a bowl game as possible and we want to play as good a football team as possible in the bowl game."

A little less than a month ago, Nebraska controlled its own destiny and owned the inside track to a spot in the national championship game as it was ranked No. 1 in both major polls and stood atop the BCS standings. However, NU has dropped two of its last three games to fall out of the championship race.

Still, the possibility of finishing the season with a 10-2 record and a top-10 finish in the polls is enough to motivate the Huskers, quarterback Eric Crouch said.

"If we come out and play our best football and prove to the country that we're deserving of a bowl game in the BCS, then that's what we're striving for," Crouch said. "A lot of those things are up in the air right now and a lot of those things we don't control. We've got to win this game. It's a big game as far as the pride and as far as the team feeling good about this year."

Another carrot in front of the Huskers is the opportunity to cinch up the program's record 32nd consecutive season with nine wins or more. Nebraska senior I-back Dan Alexander said that no one wants to be part of the team that fails to reach the 9-win standard.

"We always have this thing looming over our heads that is the history of Nebraska -- this winning tradition," Alexander said. "You have to do good to do this system justice.

"We have to go out there and prove ourselves and show everybody that Nebraska still has that winning tradition and has good teams. When we leave as seniors, we want to make sure that this program hasn't been tarnished by us being here. We want to better this program as much as we can."

If nothing else, Solich said the Huskers should at least be playing for pride.

"If there was nothing else out there for us Š we still want to be a team that every time we step out on the field plays excellent football or at least gives it our best shot," Solich said. "That's what we've been all about since the start of the season. That's what the Nebraska program has been all about."

Crouch agreed.

"The game this week is all about pride," Crouch said. "We've had a tough three weeks here, so we know we have to come out and play our best football. We've got to be motivated and make sure that we go out and give it our all.

"I know that the attitude on the team is very good at this point. We've just got to pull together."
