THE LEAGUE
Owners won't touch realignment 'til May
The NFL is realigning for the 2002 season, no secret there. The Denver Broncos will remain in the AFC West, most likely with the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers. The Seattle Seahawks likely will be shipped out to the NFC West. But none of this will become official until May.

OFFSEASON
Lepsis signs for 6 years, $27.3M
University of Colorado tight end Matt Lepsis tore up his knee and his draft dreams at the 1996 Senior Bowl. After surgery he signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent. The Broncos converted him to an offensive tackle, and he developed into one of the game's top young tackles, something the Broncos validated Tuesday when they and Lepsis agreed on a six-year, $27.3 million contract.

MARK KISZLA
Good defenders usually bad boys
Anti-social behavior isn't a requirement for playing defense in the NFL. But it helps. Defense is the dark side of America's favorite violent game. Defense is a high-testosterone mix of boiling blood. The primary goal of defense is to inflict pain. Defense is played by muscular men paid to act like nasty boys.

Turnovers mar NFL offseason
It has been a cold winter in Denver. But then, these days in the NFL, the colder the better. Teams that pay players more for what they have done in the past wind up paying for it in the future. San Francisco did. Dallas still is. Denver hasn't. But to be this strong this long, NFL organizations have to be tougher than their teams.
