Inktomi Teams Up with Content Publishers to Provide Users with Quality Content and Enhanced Search Results
Inktomi's Index Connect Offers Content Publishers Ability to Better Manage Their Web Pages and Provides Portals with New Revenue Opportunities
Foster City, Calif., March 7, 2001 -- Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced Index Connect, an extension of its content inclusion services designed to improve the overall quality and scope of information available to Internet users. Inktomi® Index Connect provides large content publishers with the ability to better manage their content, control how frequently their site is crawled and ensure their presence is best represented on the Web. In addition, Index Connect offers portals new revenue opportunities while providing comprehensive, highly relevant search results to users.
As millions of Web pages are added to the Internet daily, content publishers face new challenges in ensuring their most current content can be found. Similarly, search engines must incorporate new methods to crawl and index the Internet while sifting through an increasingly cluttered Web in order to provide users with accurate results.
Through Inktomi Index Connect, large content publishers have more control over how and when their Web pages are indexed. For example, an online news publisher can control how frequently its site is crawled to make breaking news stories available in real-time, or an online commerce site can publish updated inventory information and inform search engine users of timely special offers at its store. Current Index Connect content partners and participants include eBay, Epinions Inc., IDG, KQED Public Broadcasting in San Francisco, LAUNCH Media Inc., LookSmart, eLuminator, RollingStone.com, The Hunger Project and Virage.
"As a premier Internet music site, we want to provide all music fans with access to the best rich media and music content," said Dave Goldberg, CEO, LAUNCH Media. "Index Connect adds our most current information to the search index in an efficient and timely fashion and, through Inktomi's network of leading portals and destination sites, ensures our latest content is available to more Internet users searching for music online."
The Inktomi Index Connect service creates an efficient, performance-based revenue relationship between portals and content providers. Content publishers are charged a fee each time a user accesses their Web page through one of the Inktomi Index Connect network portals. Index Connect members, which include several Inktomi network portals, will benefit from increased revenue under the service's pay-for-performance model while providing their users with a larger offering of fresher content. In addition, the expanded database is available throughout the current Inktomi network of leading portals.
"We are pleased to be working with Inktomi as a member of the Index Connect network," said Jonas Steinman, founder and co-CEO at iWon. "This service provides us with an innovative way of generating new revenue streams while enhancing the search experience."
"Index Connect is another step toward building direct relationships with content publishers to improve the quality of content available to users," said Troy Toman, vice president and general manager, Inktomi Search Solutions Division. "This new service gives content publishers more accurate representation in the search index while providing portals with an incentive for connecting users with the right information."
Building upon Inktomi's current content inclusion offerings, Index Connect is tailored to large Web sites containing more than 1,000 URLs. Smaller content publishers with less than 1,000 URLs can subscribe to Inktomi Search/Submit, a service offered through distribution partners including VeriSign, Position Technologies and WebGravity, that provides inclusion in the Inktomi search index and an automatic 48 hour refresh on the content submitted for an annual fee. Additionally, to ensure that major charities, educational establishments and other non-profit organizations have an equal opportunity to make their content available in the search index, Inktomi is providing inclusion services free of charge to qualified organizations. Both Index Connect and Inktomi Search/Submit complement the existing crawling and indexing methods used to generate the overall Inktomi search index.
