Pennin Manathai Thottu

Films with two heroes seem to be the order of the day. What with a single hero failing to deliver the goods most of the time, film makers probably hope that two heroes teaming up will do the trick. This time the duo is Prabhu Deva and Sharat Kumar. They had earlier appeared together in the Pavitran directed film 'Indu', where Prabhu Deva made his debut as hero and Sharat made a "supportive" appearance. The two play brothers who share a deep bond in 'Pennin Manathai Thottu'. Sharat Kumar plays a 'Dada' named Balaraman. Prabhu Deva plays a medical student Sunil. Paired with him is debutante Jaya Seel from Assam. Jaya, who plays a medical student, Sunita, has faced the camera earlier for some advertisement films, two Bengali films and a Hindi film. She says, 'I am happy to work with such a professional unit. Ezhil is so cool and soft spoken." About co-star Prabhu Deva, "He is a very natural actor and a great dancer."

This is director Ezhil 's second film, which comes after a gap of about a year. His debut venture 'Thullatha Manamum Thullum' was incidentally the only Vijay starrer that tasted success in 1999. Medical students Prabhu Deva and Jaya are called by their college principal who hands over a baby to them. "The baby is not well. Find out what the problem is and give the proper medication." As the duo try to examine the baby its condition becomes worse. Panic-stricken they try to rush it to a hospital. They get caught in a traffic jam. Prabhu Deva suddenly takes over the wheel and reaches the hospital just in time. The baby is saved.

Yet another scene focusses on Sharat Kumar, Poonambalam and Jaya Seel. One day as Sunita is returning home, some rowdies waylay her and carry her off in a passing taxi. The driver turns out to be Balaraman, the dreaded 'Dada' of the place. "How dare you kidnap my brother's beloved?" he asks, and gives them the bashing up of their lives. Poonambalam plays the rowdy leader and Sharat is the "Dada" Balaram.

The shooting for the film is on at locations in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. S.A.Rajkumar composes the music. A song was shot on Prabhu Deva and his brother dance-choreographer Raju Sundaram. A set resembling a market place was erected, and about 40 dancers participated in the dance with the duo. The film's supporting cast consists of Aishwaria, Vivek Mouli Damu, Mathrubutham, Chaplin Balu, Madan Bob, Anup Ramji, Vyapuri, Hemanth, Shukran, Bharati, Nasha and Thangarasu. Malayalam actress Kaveri who made her debut in Tamil 'Kannukkul Nilavu plays Mouli's daughter and has an important part to play in the story.

'Pennin Manathai Thottu' is produced by M.Kaja Moiddeen for 'Roja combines'. A prestigious banner, it had earlier produced films like 'Porkkalam', 'Pattali' and the recently released "Sanditha Velai". Cranking the camera was Manikandan. Incidentally director Ezhil has announced his next film with Ajit & Aishwarya Rai.
