Leeds and Bayern ahead at halfway stage

At the halfway stage in this season's UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, Leeds United AFC and FC Bayern München, the 1975 finalists, have taken a big step towards the semi-finals while the other two ties are more evenly poised.

Remarkable odyssey
Leeds's remarkable Champions League odyssey continued on Matchday 13 as David O'Leary's outsiders romped to a 3-0 victory over Spanish champions Deportivo La Coruña at Elland Road. Republic of Ireland international full-back Ian Harte was the hero, scoring the first goal with a thunderous free-kick and having a hand in the other two.

English double
On the same night Arsenal FC made it two wins out of two for English clubs over Spanish opposition, scoring twice in two second-half minutes to beat last season's runners-up Valencia CF 2-1 at Highbury.

Galatasaray roar back
Arsenal's comeback from a goal down was bettered the previous evening when UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup holders Galatasaray SK recovered from 2-0 down at home to the European champions Real Madrid CF to win 3-2.

United struggling
And on the same night Bayern drew first blood in the re-run of the 1999 final against Manchester United FC when Paulo Sérgio's 86th-minute strike gave them a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.
