Sporting left to wonder what went wrong

When Sporting Clube de Portugal held a two-goal advantage over Real Madrid CF, the UEFA Champions League title holders, in their opening game of Group A, players and supporters alike must have been rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of a long stay, and the financial riches that would accrue, in the competition.

Leverkusen set to lose Völler
Rudi Völler, Germany’s reluctant hero, has still to experience defeat since taking over as first coach of the national team and then his own club Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The goalless draw which the former German international striker steered Leverkusen to in their final UEFA Champions League game, may have been his last in European club competition as Leverkusen head for the UEFA Cup and he for the World Cup with the national team, but nothing has been decided for sure yet.

Sporting go out with a whimper
Even with nothing riding on the outcome of this match for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Sporting Clube de Portugal were unable to break their duck against German clubs at the José Alvalde Stadium and register their first and only victory in the UEFA Champions League.
