Yes. Banners. Those nifty things: (Image courtesy of warcraft II developers)(I still love that game)
No square things like [come visit our website, bookmark it and visit regularly so we can get money from the banners on top of the page that say: come visit our website, bookmark it and visit regularly.... etc.] but an old, ancient banner. You could make it from wood, steel, chrome, gold, anything you see fit. Age it, tear it, be creative. You may need to create your own logo, or decide to go without and whack your initials on it. And as Bunchapixels said: you must attempt to create a sig that kicks some serious ass.
Rules: It's got to have your name on it or something else so we know it's yours. No more submissions after 30th of april, 11:59 Asylum time. Weadah and I won't be allowed to use more than 32 colors (inlcuding transparency) for a sig (don't worry, I won't apply for this one, since I am the judge over here. Respect my authoritah. Uhhmm... Can't think of anything else.
the first prize will include: The title SigMaster An own Sig Competition (with your own theme) A SigMaster sig, made by yours truly.

No better way to rise the level of competition!

silence. Don`t give up so easily. C`mon give it a shot.
buncha, yea still workin on the displace setting for the text, just wanted to get things rolling
Grumble, get it up, son!
Qlmpnr, I`ve only had PS about 6 mo. too. On the banner part it went like this: 1) basic shape w/ pen tool 2) lighting effects on a hand painted channel 3) texture in overlay mode 4) transfer lighting effects channel to a 2 channel greyscale document ( offset 2px right 2 px down in 2 nd channel ) for displace map on text
Or you could scan your sketch and colorize, etc.
Play with it, enjoy. |

My own contribution, but THIS ONE WILL NOT COMPETE FOR A PRIZE. just to make that sure. As I am the judge of this month, I cannot actually compete myself. The *.gif uses just 32 colors. *ponders* maybe I should set the limit to 16 colors for me & wead. I had a go at this, and wanted to show you.
Mini-tutorial:
The basic technique is that I made a normal flag first, then added a gray layer, and added some noise. I blurred it 5 pixels, and pressed shift-ctrl-L (auto levels) to make the black&white stand out more. then I had a go with the smudge tool, creating some ripples on it. then I grouped the layer with the flag layer, and set the blending mode to [soft light.] Animating was a little more difficult... anybody want a tut for that?
BTW, I started this sig at twice the size you see it here. Works easier than on-the-pixel work.

I can't believe I'm wasting another post on this..but hell, if ya gotta go..go with a bang....
Mahjqa...you inveterate boob...how is it that every time you're spanked for being a complete tool, you rise up again after a pity play, and proceed to show just what a metric sized tool you REALLY are?
"me and wead" Don't insult the man, he isn't here to even be insulted. You make some decent little sig files mahjqa....and what the fuck is that really worth in the realm of this pantheon you seem to want to join?
Have you seen Wead's pages? His designs? His functional DHTML? No? Well I guess most people haven't...or they'd not put you any close than a dog fart to him.
You make..a few nice sigs..that all seem to use the same effect...that's nice..here ~pat pat~..better? Now then, with your newfound backpats, try this..Don't be a fucking asshole, there's precious little room for another one around here, especially one with a head much larger than his skills.
Or is it skillz?
I meant it at the beginning of this post...what a waste...but why not...it seems like a good chunk of what's happening right here is exactly that. Noone likes the site of your arse mahjqa..so stop showing it..and better yet, stop letting it talk for you. If you want a "sig competition" then challenge someone for it, and earn some balls, don't assume you have a pair and try to stand with them.
You asked a while back, during the last pity plea, if you were an asshole.....and I said no..but you could act like one...Guess what kiddo? I think I changed my answer.
Now, for the banner work so far..great job guys, it all looks stellar. Bob, you're cruising and learning buddy..WAY TO GO!..it's a lesson some people should take, instead of churning out shite and calling it shinola.
Now, want to take issue with this? goody...but this makes for number 3, so I'll try and read, but I won't promise anything....this should be the last post on it though.
Nice work everyone...at least some spirit isn't dead..no matter what the count is.

his statements are quite correct
I mean christ mahjqa...yeah, you made some pretty sigs. you've also made some crappy ones. you certainly are no weedah. Of course, you're entitled to be an arrogant fool, it's your perogative. Just don't act like one then try to claim not to be |

Ok onto the real message:
I like the banners so far.
Bob: I like it, wow you are improving by bounds. I would say work some on the wood, can wait for version 2. Vogon: Also looks good, get down on the pixel level and show us some stuff!!! Again get that version 2 to us! Silence: Is that a jolly rodger I see? we flying the pirate flag over there, don't get caught. Excellent piece of work, I don't see variations in the wood looks like a single gradient or pattern, looks great, version 2 calls are getting hefty! Kat: Great work with the shading... I really like it, very detailed, you have time make a version 2, I have looked at some of your other works, I think something spectacular is on the horrizon for us. Mahja: new technique time? Don't sit back with the same old, perserver move on, make new better bolder. I think you are aware of the areas needing more work. Doesn't look like wind, the wood could look better, maybe the rope should be tattered, and the banner a little beaten, the wood looks slip-shod put togeather, shouldn't the objects attached to it also take up that resemblance?
Keep on perservering, I am liking what I am seeing, being completely outclassed I will reside to being a simple critic, -mage- |

to (whoever said it...short memory...) exactly - this stuff is about the art, not about saying 'look at me, I'm special' all the time. It has been said over and over that yes, all of us have an ego. You have to when you do this kinf of stuff. But when you build yourself up so high....it just starts to get sad.
as I said, it's anyone's perogative to be that way....but in my opinion it's disgraceful, selfserving and quite frankly, sickening.
I'm a very talented artist. photoshop is one of my weaker points...I prefer watercolors. If I ran around with the attitude about my watercolor paintings as mahjqa does about his PS work...I'd have few friends left...
It just makes me queasy to see people run around touting themselves as some great artistic superpower in an environment full of wonderfully talented people.
last point: if any one person has the perogative to tout him/herself as something special, then anyone else is equally entitled to tell them otherwise. fact of life. |

Time i$ Money ------ I know, I've not been very active in these parts recently... I guess the rest of my life has been getting in the way of my Asylum life. I think that's good, though, because what I'm reading here is frightening...
and a touch sickening.
Perhaps even a tiny, teensy bit relieved, actually.
Relieved???? What? ------ When I wake up each morning and look into my life, I see that my presence on the web is more than simply that I use it all the time. I do. I also publish my thoughts online, readilly accesible by all people that want to read. And why do I do that? The web is truly important to me. I exist on the web. I feel the web.
...and yet, when I come in here sometimes, I get so incredibly frustrated I just want to scream. Why is that? It's not like any of this impacts my life...or does it? I just said I live on the Net. From time to time (all too frequently, actually) someone spews verbiage across my screen that makes my world a little less enjoyable. Sometimes it gets me downright pissed off. That's no good!
Why is DG leaving? We don't need to ask th at. Look around you. If each of you could sit down and take a long, hard look at your actions, beliefs, and idealogy, you'd see why he's leaving. He's not leaving the Net...he's leaving your poisonous attitudes.
And I'm not directing this at any one person...At all. I'm not saying "hey mahjga, you're a jerk." I'm not saying that at all. I'm not directing it towards Mage and saying "hey, you're really being quite naive here." I'm saying that *everyone* here should take a long hard look at your actions...your stance on how this is all working.
Was DG a little strong when he mentioned his thoughts on mahjqa? Yes. That's his nature. I can't fault him for that. He's got a lot of reasons, in his own mind, as to why he's not happy with our little friend. So he voiced it. We move on. Could it have been better handled in e-mail? Sure. Is that DG's nature? Sometimes. Often, however, he feels it necessary to point out things that he finds offensive.
...as I am doing right now.
So who's wrong here? No one. Anyone right? Nope. It's a matter of taste. It's a matter of ethics. It's a matter of personalities clashing in ways that no one ever thought possible 30 years ago. What does this all mean?
It's the Net, bay bee ------ We stand on the precipice of something that no one considered--when egos collide. I've had my fair share of difficulties with many of you...and you know who you are. Have we resolved our differences? Probably. Will DH & mahjqa resolve? Probably, if either of them wants to.
Imagine this; I'm not taking sides. Some of you have claimed that I always leap to the aid of DG, who is a personal friend of mine. We work on projects together, we talk about our days, and we share life...yet we live a thousand miles away from eachother.
So this is the Net. People, from all backgrounds, can come together and talk to eachother. Someone gets a little headstrong, someone else puts him/her in his/her place. That's the nature of things. We're *all* different. That's how it works to be human. Don't want to accept that? You're in the *wrong* place.
A Loud Personal Note to Peter...And all of us ------ I don't want you to leave this place. We've had some good times in here, we've talked to some great people, and we've spent a great deal of time making fun of things that we find funny. That's how we work, and you know it. I don't want to have to clean up all the messes that happen without your assistance. If you leave, I'm going to have to initiate someone else to take your place here. And that scares me.
This is a community. This is a community where people from all walks of life, from all abilities, come together to celebrate what it is to be a graphic designer. You and I, for instance, are professional designers...without our abilities, we'd not eat. So our livlihoods depend on how well we do in our field.
Isn't it our duty to share that with others? If not duty, then isn't it our right and priviledge as professionals? Who's going to do the grunt work for us when we're too rich and famous to be bothered? We both live on the Net. When someone creates a site that is *absolutely* horrible, then doesn't it hurt us *not* to comment and hope to shape that site into a thing of beauty? If not, then what the hell difference does it make if there *is* a community anywhere?
The Future of Community ------ I'm not leaving here. I am here to stay--if only to surpass Doc in # of posts. If that's my only goal, I'll be here for quite some time. But more than that, I want to make certain that a longstanding, and strong community such as this one doesn't fail. And I feel morally (and egotistically) obligated to help that in it's goal.
Petty battles...such as this...needn't exist. If they do, we're lost. This isn't the world. This is the Net. We don't exist in the world. We exist in the Net. See the pattern?
Think long and hard about your acctions. My mail box is always open to corrospond and share life with all of you. I welcome it. This is, after all, one of my many homes. If my local coffeeshop started getting petty and bickery all the time...well...I'd try to stop it. This is my coffeeshop. This is me.
Thanks for reading.
