Preface

When did BeOS really start? What did Be call their early releases? Who used those releases? What did they do?

Before we start I would like to thank everyone who sent us a short story, screenshot or CD image for this feature. You will see a lot of stories from a lot of different people on the following pages that will give you an insight into the early days of BeOS. We hope you will like it and will feel even more at home with your modern BeOS and of course with BeOS R4.5.

We will try to give you a little insight and a look back to the early days of BeOS. First of all we have to show you this screenshot. It is from a very early BeOS Version, from 1994 to be exact. Way before the initial public release.

The first public BeOS release was DR1 or BeOS 1.1d1, as it was known at the time. The DR stood for Development Release of BeOS and only ran on BeBoxen, Be's multiprocesser PowerPC computers. This stage of BeOS's development was nearly 5 years after had founded Be on the principles to construct a system designed for media and everything involved.
