"Don’t You Have to Ask
Yourself Why?"
(can be sung to the tune of "American Pie"
(VERY SLOWLY – NO PARTICULAR TEMPO – MAYBE EVEN SOLO?)
A long, long time ago
A child came down to earth below
To Mary and her husband, Joe
Born in the cold night air
And somewhere in the starry night
Some shepherds saw a wondrous sight
The sky was filled with angels shining bright
Who told them He was there
So they found the baby in the straw
Their hearts and minds were filled with awe
But they didn’t know that the child they saw
Would be their King some day
(Chorus) (DELIBERATE TEMPO, BUT NOT UP TO SPEED YET)
So why, why did He come from on high
And leave His home up in heaven to be like you and I
Put on earth to suffer and die
Don’t you have to ask yourself, “why?”
(AT NORMAL TEMPO)
Don’t you have to ask yourself, “why?”
He grew to be strong and wise
And it didn’t take long to realize
He had a special job to do
He spoke of law to wise old men
The words He said astonished them
They were amazed at what the young boy knew
Ah, but somewhere deep within their hearts
They knew that this was just the start
One day He’d be revealed
As the Prophecy fulfilled
He was a young man filled with love and grace
He’d one day save the human race
All sin resolved without a trace
The day that He would rise
(Chorus)
When he grew up He left his home
And He wandered in the desert alone
That’s when the devil tempted Him
But no matter how hard Satan tried
The Holy Lamb pushed him aside
The devil’s face was lookin’ mighty grim
And as Christ looked out on the land
He knew He had to take His stand
His time had finally come
‘Cause He was the Chosen One
So He traveled down to Galilee
And found some men who worked the sea
And to the twelve He said, “Follow me
And I will set you free”
(Chorus)
Each day He lived was never the same
As He cured the sick, the blind, the lame
He even made a dead man rise
And the word went out across the land
Of the wondrous works done by His hand
But no one ever stopped to realize
That one day this young man would die
He’d do it all for you and I
His sacrifice supreme
Would fulfill our wildest dreams
So He rode into Jerusalem
The people there all welcomed Him
Waving palms, their faces in a grin
Their King arrived that day
(Chorus)
He had one last meal, then He prayed
“Cause He knew that He would be betrayed
Someplace called Gethsemanee
They mad Him wear a crown of thorns
His face was beat, His flesh was torn
He was in pain, and in agony
Well, Pilate was to be His judge
But Jesus’ faith, it would not budge
So the people had to choose
They said, “Crucify the King of the Jews!”
So they nailed Him to a cross that day
And watched Him as He passed away
But no one knew the price He paid
The day that Jesus died
(Chorus)
(VERY SLOWLY – MAYBE EVEN A SOLO UP TO THE *?)
They laid Him in a quiet grave
That some kind old man to Mary gave
Then they left to mourn for Him
But like the wise men prophecized
Our Lord would conquer death and rise
And free mankind from all his sin
* And rise He did on Easter day
That heavy stone was rolled away
All trace of sin was gone
Yeah, salvation was finally won
And I hope as you are here today
You’ll listen to me as I say
A greater price He could not pay
He gave His life for you
You should be singin’
I know why He came from on high
And left His home up in heaven to be like you and I
Came to earth to suffer and die
I don’t have to ask myself, “why”
No, I don’t have
to ask myself, “why”
