Blogger Pro info

New: I've got a poll on how much Pro should cost, c'mon in and vote. 100% devoid of recount jokes, I promise!

The Party Line

First, the official word from the Blogger.com Products page:

Blogger Pro (coming soon)

Blogger Pro is a collection of optional upgrades for those premium features. These options may include, integrated reader comments, higher security publishing, RSS output, and other cool stuff that we don't want to talk about just yet.

I'm not trying to cover all the features or technical info about Blogger in general, the website already does that pretty well. This is to cover what's new or improved in Pro.

Known Features:

(It's reasonable to assume these will be in Blogger Pro.)

  • Changing post dates and times. Future-dated posts don't appear until the specified day. (source: Evhead.com)
  • By-post Archiving: A separate permanent archive page for each post. (source: Evhead.com)
  • Email posts to a blog (source: This is all over the place, including the Blogger Tour. I'll put a specific link up later.)
  • Spell checking for posts (source: Evhead.com)
  • Add reader comments to a blog (source: Evhead.com)
  • Publish via SCP or FTP (source: somewhere in one of the Blogger Discuss Developer threads, I'll find it later.)
  • Output to RSS 1.0 or .91. Since these formats require subject and URL values, we can extrapolate the presence of...
  • Per-post subject and URL fields. (source: Evhead.com)
  • Archive your blog more frequently, such as daily or perhaps arbitrarily. (source: Also in Blogger Discuss Developer)
  • Archiving by subject (source: Blogger Discuss)
  • Additional Date/Time formats
  • My Personal Favorite Feature: Drafts. I'd write a lot more lengthy posts if I had draft functionality. (source: Blogger Discuss)
  • The Longest-Awaited Feature award: Automated RSS creation, which has been "coming soon" since the day Blogger launched. (source: Evhead.com)

Maybes:

(These are pie in the sky, or I made them up, or they just seem likely. If not in Pro, maybe in some future release.)

  • Multiple templates for a single blog. (Output to AvantGo and for desktops simultaneously) (Suggested by Adam Blust)
  • Additional language support -- We need Esperanto!
  • No branding required
  • some functionality for uploading and/or managing images
  • An external API
  • more advanced templating functionality
  • Enhancements to the wireless/AvantGo functionality

Pricing:

Bottom line is: nobody knows yet. I suspect even the folks at Pyra don't know yet. If you want some hints, though, read Ev's excellent thoughts on pricing. That should give you an idea of where they're headed.

Personally, I'm sure I'll be there with credit card in hand as soon as it's all announced. 'Til then, here's a poll for you to voice your opinion:

How much would you pay monthly for Blogger Pro?

$19.95
$10.00
$5.00
$2.00
I'd stick with Classic

View results. (Note: This is based on the assumption that we're ignoring concerns about collecting the fees themselves. So pretend there's no PayPal tax, and don't consider whether the amount would be collected monthly, yearly, biannually, etc...)

Other Info

Obviously, you can get a good feel for the mindset and direction of Pro by clicking around at Evhead and Megnut and the Blogger site itself, but there's also a lot of good info to be had in the Blogger Discussion Forums. (This link will show you any thread that mentions Pro.)

If you're interested in outputting your blog to XML and then parsing it on your page, Matt Kingston has a great tutorial on Blogger, XML, and PHP. If you're on a Windows server, you might be interested in the Blogger, XML, and ASP tutorial on the Blogger site.

Yeah, yeah, I know I missed something. Email me and let me know.
