The Little Nationals Debate Tournament

The Little Nationals Tournament is held at South Saint Paul High School.  It is often the largest tournament held in Minnesota.

The tournament is a Tournament of Champions qualifer at the finals level.

Finals Results

1999 Blake (Berthiaume & Zhang) over Edina (Puram & Gill)

The final round never actually occurred.  Edina resigned because Sam Gill had to go to some lame dance or something.
Even though SID! covered for him, we all knew.
1998 St. Thomas Academy (Phillips & Gamradt) over Sioux Falls Roosevelf (Ausland & Wilson)
1997 Blake (Geoff Garen & Lowin) over Rosemount (Crichton & Smith)
1996 Blake (Geoff Garen & Lowin) over Bloomington Jefferson (Prestwood & Stukas)
1995 Eagan  (Fellows & Vanderarde) over Stillwater (Goyette & Stephan)
The 1995 Little Nationals was a bit of a disappointment, since the first date was snowed out, and we had a one day tournament with four rounds instead, the week after Blake. We had 32 teams, and when each team arrived, they would flip for a place on the bracket, and first round determined if you went to the winners side or the consolation side of the bracket. It was kind of lame, but we were looking for
something creative to do. I had a pair of freshman that year (Miklya and Topp), who won their first two rounds, and thus, were quarterfinalists. So, not to rip on the finalists too much, but there should definitely be an asterisk by that tournament.
- Conrad Anderson
1994 Roseville (Thimpsen & Kamath) over Forest Lake (Kloster & Sichenader)
1993 Bloomington Jefferson  (Alme & Leistikow) over Edina (Engstrom & Stiehn)
1992 Edina (Drake & Peterson) over Sheboygan North
According to Conrad Anderson, this is the only case of a sixteenth seed team going on to win the tournament.
1991 Brookfield Central (Heling & ?) over Roseville (Kumar & Pederson)
1990 Roseville (Kumar & Doherty) over Wayzata (Frericks & Campbell)
1989 Mesabi East (Makkyla & Goodman) against Forest Lake (Norbin & Kult) Who won this round?
1988 Roseville (Kumas & Schmidt) over Coon Rapids (Bondhus & Lilja)
1987 Watertown (Hanson & Moes) over Brookfield Central (Groombridge & Wasson)
I have a strong recollection that in 1987 Brookfield Central (Groombridge/Wasson) lost to Watertown (Jon Hanson and ?), because people were saying at the time that it was the first Little Nats final contested between two non-Minnesota teams (whether this was true, I can't say). Hanson took a speaker award at Nats that year.
- Patrick Smith

According to DDR, the final round was a 2-1, with three former SSP debaters on the panel.

1986 Brookfield Central (Groombridge & ?) over Brainerd
1985
1984
1983
1982 Wayzata (Appelget & Jenson) over St. Francis (Charrier & Florman)
1981
1980
