Match synopsis
FC Bayern München captain Stefan Effenberg was one of three players sent off in the 1-1 draw with BV Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, a result which keeps Bayern top of the German first division by one point. Defender Bixente Lizarazu was also sent off for the visitors and nine Bayern players were cautioned in an ill-tempered match at the Westfalenstadion, Dortmund.

Hero to villain

Paraguayan forward Roque Santa Cruz gave Bayern the best possible start after six minutes, slotting home from six metres out after a pass from French international Lizarazu. Lizarazu then turned from hero to villain, as he was sent off for a second bookable offence just after the half hour mark.

Effenberg off
10-man Bayern were then caught cold by a 52nd minute strike from Fredi Bobic, as his shot went just inside the near post after good work from Lars Ricken. Things continued to get worse for the visitors, as Stefan Effenberg, the inspiration behind Wednesday's 1-0 UEFA Champions League quarter-final victory over Manchester United CF, was given a red card for a challenge on Brazilian midfielder Dede in the 55th minute.

Late chances
Dortmund's Evanilson was also sent off just before full-time, for a tackle from behind on Paulo Sérgio. The home side came closest to clinching the points in injury time, when both Sunday Oliseh and Thomas Rosicky hit the post, but the frantically paced game finally ended in a draw.

Philosophical mood
Bayern head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was in philosophical mood after the game. With the German first division title race nearing its climax, the most important thing had been to avoid defeat.
"We needed to defend after the Manchester United game and with nine men it's never going to be pretty."
Midfielder Effenberg added: "I don't think it got nasty out there. It's all part of the game."
