The Old Stuff Chronicles
-
Matt Dixon - Saturday Mar 31 16:05:10 2001
Legion Down Under is a level likely unknown to the vast majority of
you, for two reasons. First and foremost, Legion dates back to June of
1994 -- a time when many people were still unfamiliar with the concept of
levels beyond id's original twenty-seven. Second, much to my surprise and
perhaps most importantly, Legion cannot be found on either ftp.cdrom.com or
its many mirrors -- making it something of a lost classic. Authored by Jim
McColm, Legion Down Under draws inspiration from id's original three
episodes and meshes the motifs of the three together in, considering the
date released, a fresh display of textual creativity. While not especially
difficult, Legion will lure players back for a repeat performance because of
the non-linearity present. Enjoy! (Replaces E2M1 of Doom 1.)
Next week, look forward to Doomworld hosting another lost classic from Jim
McColm via The Old Stuff Chronicles...a level that is, again, foreign to
ftp.cdrom.com and its mirrors -- and superior in every way to the wonderful
Legion Down Under.

Uh neither of the brothers are at those companies... you may be thinking of Mattias Worch that worked on MM1/2 & Requiem and he's at Legend... I'm pretty sure he's the lead level designer for Unreal2. (I think CliffB is the lead designer itself)

At least one of them's now working for a games company, either Ritual or Rogue I think.

Whatever happened to the innocent crew? They not only came up with this particular opus of doom moding, but also made NWT if i remember correctly. Well, I don't wanna let off too much about this stuff, so Ling et. al. have something to say about Obit when they make a mention of it here.

Hey, I remember that, it was awesome. Thanks for the link, as I had completely forgotten Obituary even existed. I'm downloading it right now, so that I can go kill me some of those rocket launcher zombies myself.

That shoulder-mounted rl zombieman is the coolest add-on monster ever to Doom.
I completely agree -- great levelset too.

TNT? Obituary? Get ye from my sight, thou quailing swag-bellied canker-blossom. The brilliance of Obituary cannot be attributed to TNT, but rather...TiC.
All kidding aside, Obituary is certainly a fantastic little set (of seventeen levels). For the curious onlooker who has no idea what Rethcir and I are discussing, I encourage you to follow this link for a download, ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/levels/doom2/m-o/obtic11.zip or turn to http://www.tic.de/doom/doom.html for more information.
As for the chronological chronicling of Old Stuff...that has not been the plan, though something akin to that may develop in the coming weeks.

Are you guys going to try to do your oldstuffs in more or less chronological order of release? IE are you going to do the very early stuff before stuff that's 2-3 years old? Cuz I think my main suggestion for an Oldstuff entry would be TNT's Obituary PC, which is somewhat underrated yet very, very l33t imho.
