"Rrific" kid tops national search for outstanding boy scouts
By Christine C. Rivero
SEVEN is a lucky number for a lot of people and for the
students of Chiang Kai Shek College in Manila, it’s something to be very proud
of.
For six straight years, a student of their school has been
chosen among the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines. In fact, in
1999, two CKSC students made it to the top 10. One of them was JI "‘Rrific" kid
and wushu practitioner Richard C. Obiles (check out JI, Feb. 5, 2000).
This year, the seventh CKSC scout to earn a slot in the top 10
is 16-year-old Marvin Boni Ang Gaw Go. Even better, of the 10 winning scouts,
Marvin was judged best overall, making him the topnotcher of the most
outstanding scout in the whole country! And, by the way, Marvin was a "‘Rrific"
kid too (JI, Aug. 5, 2000).
Top of the tops
"I didn’t expect to be topnotcher," Marvin told us a little
shakily after the awarding ceremonies held on Oct. 31 at the Philippine
International Convention Center.
Asked what he was feeling, Marvin enumerated, "Happy, excited,
scared. . ."
Scared? What’s there to be scared of? "Winning this means
having greater responsibilities," he replied, "I should serve as a better role
model not only for our school but now for the whole Philippines."
Considering his track record, though, we figure Marvin has
nothing to worry about. He has led fellow scouts and student leaders in various
community projects including a medical and dental mission in Tondo and a
clean-up drive that had them dredging canals, sweeping the streets and
repainting the graffiti-marred walls of Chinatown.
For almost a year now, he has also been the voice of all scouts
in Luzon as the Luzon Scouts Representative to the National Executive Board of
the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.
On top of that, he’s a multi-awarded honor student at school
and a well-loved leader and classmate. For now, Marvin says he’ll continue
serving in similar projects in his community and he’ll do his best to work even
harder.
Winners, too
"I believe in the old saying that if you share your best effort
with others, God will multiply them for you," he says, "I gave my best and
luckily all the projects I joined became successful and helped a lot of
people."
The other winning scouts are Derrick Ituralde (Batangas),
Angelo Karlo Agasa (Olongapo), Mark Gay-as (Benguet), Abelardo Luis De Asis
(Northern Samar), Jerome Miclat (La Union), Aldwin Pagdanganan (Cavite), Jan
Erickson Tullas (Quezon), Robin William Jessup (Sorsogon), Yasser Sarona
(Mandaluyong City) and Joefer Yanson (Negros). All the winners received a cash
prize, a two-year college scholarship, a trophy and plaques for their schools
and local councils.
