Woman's Day Granny Squares #2, 1974


ANOTHER EASY ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL PATTERN!!!

SIZES: One size fits all. Garment width around lower edge about 40".

GAUGE: For granny square, 3 dc = 1"; for body, 5 dc = 2".

MATERIALS: Spinnerin Wintuk Featherlon, 2 2-oz. skeins green; Frostlon Petite, 5 1 -oz. balls green/blue mix; Susie, 9 100-gram balls dark green. Crochet hook size J, or size required to crochet to gauge.

SQUARES: Make 6. Note: Use one strand of Wintuk Featherlon and one strand of Frostlon Petite held tog. Ch 6, join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 2 dc in ring, * ch 1, work 3 dc in ring, repeat from * twice more, ch 1; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3, sl st in each st to ch-1 sp, sl st in ch-1 sp.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp, * ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * twice more, ch 1; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3, sl st in each st to ch-1 sp, sl st in ch-1 Sp.
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp, * ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * twice more, end ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3, sl st to next ch-1 sp.
Rnds 4 through 7: Continue as on Rnd 3, having 1 more 3-dc group on each side on each rnd. At the end of Rnd 7 there will be 5 3-dc groups on each side, and 2 3-dc groups in each comer. Fasten off. Block each granny.

HOOD: Assemble 4 grannies by whip-stitching them together, wrong sides tog, following chart below for placement of squares, and connecting point A to point A, and point B to point B. Then sew the seams from A to C and from B to D. Set hood aside.

BACK: Row 1: With Susie, ch 6; on right side, starting in first dc after any ch-1 corner sp of 5th square, * work 1 sc in each dc and ch-1 sp to next corner, ch 1, sk corner ch-1 sp, repeat from * once more, sc in each dc and ch-1 sp on 3rd side of square, end with sc in dc before next corner sp -- 81 sc; ch 9, turn.
       
Note: The 4th side of square will be neck edge of back which will be sewn to hood later.
Row 2: Work 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, * dc in each sc to next corner ch-1 sp, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in corner sp, repeat from * once, dc in each sc on 3rd side, then work 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, 2 dc in last ch, ch 2, turn.
Row 3: Counting turning ch-2 as first dc, work 1 dc in last dc of previous row to inc 1 dc, * dc in each dc to corner sp, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in corner sp, repeat from * once, dc in each dc to turning ch, 2 dc in turning ch for an inc; ch 2, turn.
Rows 4 through 7: Repeat Row 3 four more times, end at top right side edge of square; ch 2, turn.

Right Sleeve: Row 8: With turning ch as first dc, work 1 dc in last dc of previous row to inc 1 dc at top edge of sleeve, dc in each of next 38 dc; ch 2, turn -- 40 dc.
Row 9: With turning ch as first dc, work 1 dc in next dc (no inc at this edge), dc in each dc to turning ch, 2 dc in turning ch; ch 2, turn. Continue in dc, inc'ing 1 dc at top edge of sleeve every row 8 more times -49 dc across last row of sleeve. Fasten off.

Left Sleeve: On wrong side, join yam in 39th dc from top edge on other side of back, ch 2 for first dc, dc in each dc to turning ch, 2 dc in turning ch for an inc at top edge of sleeve -- 40 dc. Complete to correspond to right sleeve.

Back Lower Edge: On wrong side, join yam in dc after corner sp on lower edge, ch 2 for first dc, dc in each dc to dc before next corner sp; ch 2, turn. Work 9 more rows even in dc. Fasten off.

FRONT: Work same as for back.

FINISHING: Seam shoulders and top edges of sleeves; sew side and sleeve seams. Sew hood to neck leaving about 1-1/2" free at top edge of center front square.

Tie: With 1 strand of Wintuk FeatherIon and 1 strand of Frostlon Petite held tog, crochet a chain about 60" long. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Weave through dc's around neck and tie in front.
