THE FIRST EYEWITNESS NEWS THEME FOR KYW-TV 1965-1971, 1982-1983
When KYW first started doing "Eyewitness News" in August 1965 (FYI, the "Eyewitness News" concept was invented in Philadelphia, but there are rumors that KPIX or KYW now WKYC in Cleveland invented the "Eyewitness" format). News Director Al Primo used a score titled "007" from the movie "From Russia With Love" as their theme.
(He must like movie music -- he did it at WABC-TV Channel 7 with Cool Hand Luke of course.) KYW used it until about 1971... then moved onto other themes. They brought back "007" in 1982.
KYW-TV EYEWITNESS NEWS 1976-1980 THEME
now-defunct Telesound Productions in San Francisco, this is the full
close to the "Action News" package. It was first used on KYW-TV
Channel 3 Eyewitness News in Philadelphia. It was the second most
popular theme in the Delaware Valley next to WPVI Action News. It
was also used on WKYC-TV Action 3 News in Cleveland.
KYW EYEWITNESS NEWS OPEN/CLOSE 1981-1982
This theme was recorded on audio tape. It is bad quality, but then again, so was KYW's news at that point.
KYW EYEWITNESS NEWS OPEN 1983
now-defunct Telesound Productions in San Francisco, this package is
called "And You" and was rumored to be first used on WCVB-TV
NewsCenter 5 in Boston, Mass. This package was also used on
KYW-TV in Philadelphia, WOR-TV in Secaucus, KPIX-TV in San
Francisco, WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C., WVTM in Birmingham, and
WFTV in Orlando.
KYW EYEWITNESS NEWS CLOSE 1983
This is the full close of the theme package above. Remember to call Channel 3, when you
KYW EYEWITNESS NEWS CLOSE 1983-1986
has vocals just like WPVI's Action News package. The full close has one chorus of their station campaign called "Believe In Yourself," and the instrumental version at the end.
KYW EYEWITNESS NEWS CLOSE 1986
This is a theme which you've probably heard as a music bed for many low budget commercials, but then again, their newscast was still low budget!!! About six months after this theme was used, it was replaced by the Gari theme which is the next link. Composed by Network Music Library.
KYW EYEWITNESS NEWS CLOSE 1986-1991
Yes, the Frank Gari package composed for
WLOS-TV: "Turn To News." KYW dropped this theme after
they changed their title from "Eyewitness News" to "The News." The theme was used in stations ALL OVER the country, primarily on the East Coast. It was used on WGHP in High Point, NC, WVEC in Norfolk, VA, and WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach, Florida.
In fact, WPEC had an update for the package made in

THE ORIGINAL WPVI ACTION NEWS THEME 1970-NOW
This is the original "Move Closer to Your World" package in the early 70s. Albert W. Ham composes this theme. He also wrote
"Part of Your Life" with Walter C. Liss Jr.
It's the pure thundering sounds of Action News. Back in the early and late 70's, the station used to loop this theme over and over to make it longer. Mel Kampmann, originating news director of ACTION NEWS from then WFIL-TV, Philadelphia explains... "There was an earlier and more original ACTION NEWS theme written by a music major at Temple University, once we told him how the show would run. It ran from the original date of April 6, 1970 to about mid 1972. The station, by then, was WPVI-TV, having been taken over by CapCities a year
earlier. Our greatest thrill was to hear a local high school band march into Veterans Stadium at half-time of an Eagles football game, playing the original ACTION NEWS
theme, and getting a standing ovation. (When did the crowd EVER cheer for something in Philly, instead of BOO?) Triangle Broadcasting for the rights paid the writer of the original $75.00. By today’s standards, and
by how popular and successful the program became, that is really eye opening."
WPVI ACTION NEWS 1970-NOW BUMPER
Along with the classic 70's theme, here's the 70's bumper in the clear!!! Composed by the late Albert W. Ham.
WPVI ACTION NEWS OPEN 1980-NOW
This is the actual Move Closer To Your World / Action News theme open from the early 80's. I really don't know if WPVI used this as their open. All I know is WPVI is still using the classic 70's theme as their open. Composed by the late Albert W. Ham.
WPVI ACTION NEWS CLOSE 1980-NOW
This is the full early 80's Move Closer To Your World / Action News theme song. WPVI is still using this theme as their close. Composed by the late Albert W. Ham.
WPVI ACTION NEWS CLOSE 1980's
Remember some stations used this 80's Move Closer To Your World / Action News theme. This was the close to the theme. This is not the full close (missing 10 seconds in the beginning). People from Philadelphia might
notice a very different melody to this close because it was used at WTNH in New Haven, CT. Composed by the late Albert W. Ham.
WPVI ACTION NEWS CLASSIC CLOSE!!!
"Action News is
Everywhere," and this full 2:10 close is one of the greatest news theme closes period. It is and still being used on
(do note that the 'P' stands
for Philly and the 'VI' is roman numeral 6), but on a minimal basis. It's used to close Channel 6's Sunday morning "Issues and Answers" public affairs program. The show usually runs tight, and you never hear a lot of theme at the end. This theme was also used as the main close to Capital Cities owned WKBW-TV in Buffalo. Composed by the late Albert W. Ham.

WCAU CHANNEL 10 NEWS CLOSE 1982-1985
WCAU used the infamous WBBM 1975 Channel 2 News Chicago theme for their newscast.
WCAU CHANNEL 10 NEWS 1982-1985 OPEN
original 1975 WBBM open to the theme above.
WCAU CHANNEL 10 NEWS LONG CLOSE 1982-1985
Another WBBM theme used on WCAU. This theme is copyrighted by CBS, Inc. The song was originally called "I love Chicago, Chicago my home." It was composed by a folk singer. WBBM and it's owner CBS bought the copyright and had
Dick Marks arrange it as a news theme. This was done with the expressed permission of the copyright holder, CBS (not Dick Marks). I'm looking for some or all cuts of the package.
WCAU CHANNEL 10 NEWS CLOSE 1986
At this time, Channel 10's anchors opened each newscast by saying, "This is the way it is." That
phrase was also a big ad campaign for them at the time. This open was never aired without of the announcer at the beginning saying "Channel 10 Philadelphia." The theme didn't last
long and was replaced by the upbeat version of the WCBS 1985-1989 news package (now called
WCAU CHANNEL 10 NEWS 1986-1995
WCAU used the upbeat version of WCBS'
1985 package from 1986 to 1993. From 1993 to 1985, they were using
Phase Four of the PNP after they became NewsCenter 10.
Over 100 stations have used PNP, so that list is
obviously too long to print here.
WCAU NEWS 10 5:00 THEME 1995
WCAU did not begin using the "News 10" name until Sept, of 1995 when the station switched from CBS to NBC. Before the switch, they called themselves "Newscenter 10" for a few months and had a new theme, the theme was a "sister" to the theme they used for "Channel 10 News."
This open from 615 Music's "Impact" is now playing on
WTVF in Nashville, TN along with many other stations.
WPHL-TV Channel 17

It's called "News Matrix." Also currently used on WSYX/WTTE (Channel 6
[ABC] and FOX 28) in Columbus, OH.
