It would seem that the last thing Dupont Circle needs is another coffee bar. With Starbucks on nearly every corner, the area should have reached caffeine overdose. But judging by the crowds vying for seats on the plush couches and mismatched chairs at the newly opened Xando, Washingtonians can't get enough of java-fueled hangouts. Xando offers a mind-boggling array of hot and cold coffee drinks. Along with the by now familiar flavored coffees, Xando serves such brews as Caramel Mocha, Iced Vanilla Latte Screamer (which contains ice cream) and Power Arctic Mocha (a mixture of proteins, vitamins and carbohydrates provides the power).
By day, office workers line up to take out Xando's many coffee concoctions, while others with more time on their hands park themselves for hours, nursing a cappuccino or an espresso. If reading or people-watching seem too idle for you, Xando will plug your lap top into a phone line, so you can at least appear to be industrious as you sip your Caramel Arctic Mocha.
To curb the caffeine jitters, Xando also serves an assortment of soups, salads, sandwiches (actually, Xandwiches) and sweets. The menu, available all day, includes grilled panini and wraps with a variety of ingredients for around $4.95, various salads, soup and bruschetta for $4.50, and a tempting array of desserts, such as Tri-Colored Mousse and White Chocolate Almondine cake, for around $3.95. Xando may be the only establishment in the D.C. area to offer S'mores, complete with your own personal table-top flame to toast the marshmallows.
In addition to all of these attractions, Xando has one thing none of its many competitors can claim booze. At 4 p.m. every day, a painting behind the counter lifts up to reveal a full bar. The latte that got you going at 9 a.m. can be enjoyed again at happy hour, transformed by Kahlua, Irish Cream and Grand Marnier into a Mocha Kiss. The Mocha Martini is potent, but its brown hue and chalky cocoa powder-dusted rim are somewhat off-putting. Beer, wine and traditional cocktails are also served.
