Religious Excitement

Palmyra, New York:  In recent months there has been a lot of excitement and fervor over the subject of religion here in the Palmyra area.  This new wave of excitement seems to be the latest to sweep the area since the last war with England.
It appears that this current wave of revivalism started with the Methodists, Joseph Smithbut has now spread to all of the churches in the area including the Baptists and the Presbyterians.  All seem to be contending virgously for their faith and all are winning converts.
Of particular interest is the story of young Joseph Smith from Manchester.  He states that in his search for the true faith, that he followed the admonition of James, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God" (James 1:5).  He claims that his prayer was answered in a remarkable way.  See  Lesson 3 for the full story.

The Pratt
Chronicles

Parley P. Pratt

Editor's Note:  This paper has learned the fascinating story of a man by the name of Parley Pratt.  Over the next several issues we will publish excerpts from his story.

"Parley Parker Pratt, the subject and author of these sketches, an third son of Jared and Charity Pratt, of Canaan, Columbia County, New York, was born April 12, 1807, in Burlington, Otsego County,
N.Y.
"Of my early youth I shall say but little.  My father was a
hard working man, and generally occupied in agricultural pursuits; and, although limited in education, he sometimes taught school, and even vocal music."
"He was a man of excellent

morals; and he exerted himself
diligently, by stern example as well as precept , to instill into the minds of his children every principle of integrity, honesty, and virtue.
"He taught us to venerate our Father in Heaven, Jesus Christ, His prophets and Apostles, as well as the Scriptures written by them; while at the same time he belonged to no religious sect, and was careful to preserve his children free from all prejudice in favor of or against any particular denomination, into which the so-called Christian world was then unhappily divided."
Parley goes on and talks about his limited opportunities for formal education, though he says: "But I always loved a book.  If I worked hard, a book was in my hand in the morning while others were sitting down to breakfast; the same at noon; if I had a few moments, a book!  a BOOK!  A book at evening, while others slept or sported; a book on Sundays; a book at every leisure moment of my life."  To be continued.

A Big Thanks From Brother Beardall

Over the past several weeks I have received many, many e-mails full of holiday greetings and appreciation for my webpage.  I want to thank all of you that have written.  Due to time constraints, I have only been able to respond to a few of you.  I have read all of your letters.  I am deeply appreciative of your generous thoughts.  I am the one that has been blessed through this effort and it has been a remarkable thing to hear and correspond with my Brothers and Sisters throughout the world.  Thanks again and I will do my best to continue this effort.
