Michelle Kwan's parents are immigrants from China and run a Chinese restaurant in Torrence, California. Kwan
started to skate at the age of five after watching her older brother play hockey. She won her first figure skating
competition at age 7. Kwan enrolled in the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) as a freshman in the fall of
1999 and is a full time student.
Kwan always wears a Chinese good luck charm around her neck that was given to her by her grandmother. Her elder
sister Karen competed at the international level as well. She is now a senior at Boston University.
