Electronic Gaming Monthly 141 - April 2001

The April 2001 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly features the PlayStation 2's killer app, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec. EGM sits down with Kazunori Yamauchi, GT3's director, for an in-depth look at the game's research, development, and artistic vision. The votes are in, and EGM is giving you the skinny on the greatest games of 2000 with its Gamers' Choice Awards. Find out if your favorite game made the cut and check out the results of the reader vote as well.

Nintendo's upcoming handheld, the Game Boy Advance, is just around the corner, and the April issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly has the first previews for its games. Mario Advance, Mario Kart Advance, F-Zero Advance, and Tactics Ogre are just a few of the GBA titles to be previewed. For the Dreamcast, Fighting Vipers 2 and the follow-up to one of the most critically acclaimed games last year, Shenmue II, get advanced peeks. On the Nintendo 64, Rare's naughty 3D platformer, Conker's Bad Fur Day, enjoys a feature-length preview. The PlayStation 2 is building up steam, as evidenced by the enormous amount of preview coverage in the April 2001 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. Half-Life, Extermination, SSX: DVD, NBA Street, and the sequel to the popular PlayStation snowmobile driving game, Sled Storm 2, are just a fraction of the PS2 games previewed. PlayStation development is winding down, and the April 2001 issue of EGM proves it with just four previews for Sony's 32-bit console. As the PlayStation is winding down, Microsoft's Xbox is just revving up. There are previews for two Xbox games, including Battlefield 1942 and Project Dragonfly.

This is a slow time of year for the video game industry, but there are still plenty of games up for review. On the Dreamcast, the review crew puts NBA Hoopz, Surf Rocket Racer, and Kao the Kangaroo through its paces. The lone Nintendo 64 review for Polaris SnoCross is symbolic of the dwindling interest in the console, while the PlayStation enjoys a bevy of reviews for games such as Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, Metal Slug X, and Darkstone. The PlayStation 2 is in its early heyday, and there are 10 reviews for Sony's latest console. ATV Offroad Fury, Knockout Kings 2001, Onimusha: Warlords, and the first Star Wars game for the PS2, Starfighter, are just a sample of the PlayStation 2 reviews in the April 2001 issue. The Game Boy Color also gets a healthy dose of the review crew, with eight reviews in all for Nintendo's long-standing handheld.

The April 2001 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly also has the latest news from the video game industry, including Sega's big announcement that it will no longer produce consoles, as well as an exposé on the PlayStation 2, which demonstrates evidence of Sony's strong-arming retailers into promoting the PlayStation 2. As if all this weren't enough, the April issue is full of the codes and witty commentary that you've come to expect from Electronic Gaming Monthly.
