Our Doors Are Open To You:
The Petaluma Historical Museum and Library and Museum is dedicated to the history of Petaluma and its environs. From its earliest days as an inland port to beyond its reign as the "Egg Basket of the World", pictures, artifacts and the written word chronicle the "who", the "how", and the "when" of Petaluma history.
The museum, dedicated in October 1978, occupies the old Andrew Carnegie Free Public Library building. Designed by local architect Brainerd Jones in 1903, it was recently placed on the National Register.
The roblar sandstone and white Alameda Rock exterior and fine interior paneling and woodwork remain untouched. Only moveable partitions and modern lighting have been added.
Permanent exhibits upstairs focus on specific areas of Petaluma's past as well as mini-exhibits of current community interest. Administrative offices, textile rooms, and a larger capacity research library are also located upstairs.
In addition to rotating exhibits, the main floor contains an audio/visual area, a well stocked gift shop, and a well-organized research library that offers trained assistance to visitors. Public events are held in the rotunda.
