Xzibit
Restless
Loud Records
By Nicole Lavonne

Obviously, three's the magic number for the people's underground champion Xzibit. Acclaimed by heads as one of the most skilled lyricists in modern-day hip hop, he has steadily graced rap with his presence on numerous artists' projects and made unforgettable appearances on the "Up in Smoke" tour. Now with Dr. Dre serving as the executive producer of his long- awaited third album, Restless, all eyes are on him.

Mr. X to the Z continues the lyrical slaughter he began on At the Speed of Life (1996) and 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz (1998). On Restless, many of X's high profile friends - Snoop, Dre, Erick Sermon, Battlecat, Eminem, Tha Alkaholiks - return the favor by appearing on the album. "Alkaholik" features Erick Sermon on the mic and behind the boards delivering his trademark blend of funk, alongside X, Tash and J-Ro of Tha Liks dropping the sonic boom for the club. Meanwhile, X and Snoop rock over a wicked sounding track on "D.N.A. (Drugs and Alkohol)," produced by Rick Roc.

Nate Dogg brings his well-renown, sing-song hook for the romantic thugs on the Battlecat- produced "Been a Long Time." Finally, Dr. Dre assumes production duties on the lead single "X" as Mr. X to the Z "came to give you what you lackin' whenever you hear them other niggas rappin." Eminem even walks in the tracks of his mentor with his name appearing in the production credits of "Don't Approach Me."

On X's tribute to Boogie Down Production's classic on "Kenny Parker Show 2001, the godfather of hip hop KRS-ONE serves as the hype man/master of ceremonies while Xzibit brings the heat. Bringing things back to the West Coast, "Rimz and Tirez" produced by Soopafly features Defari and Goldie Loc spittin' bars about their wheels as Kokane sings the hook in his most convincing pimp style.

With Xzibit coming with nothing but raw and uncensored lyrics, Restless is not for those with tender ears. Formerly one of hip hop's most underrated artists, it's gonna be hard to continue to sleep on him after this album. Xzibit is finally poised to get the credit he deserves.
