WITNESS #1 TESTIMONY

CAN YOU RUN THROUGH BASICALLY WHAT YOU SAW AND THEN WE'LL GO BACK AND I WILL ASK YOU SOME QUESTIONS?

OK. I got in around 4:00 in the morning and I looked in the northeastern sky and I saw a bright star. Then I did something and then I said to myself that's awful low for a star. So I took another look at it and I kept watching it and I noticed it was moving, so I kept watching it as it got closer. As it got close enough that I could see under it, I could see a lot of red lights shining down. So when it got where I could see a side view of it, it was two to three stories high just like a house up there, with many windows and a very bright light on the inside. If somebody would have walked in front of the window you could have seen it. It was moving very slow and I heard nothing. It was just as quiet and it kind of scared me a little bit you know. What was it? What is it? I just stood there watching it. As it left Highland going out toward the southwest, the rear of it was not near as bright. There was windows in it but it was dimmer. So I stood there awhile. Nobody's going to believe me what I seen up there. So I got in my truck and I went down to the police station and I told the lady in there, the dispatcher. I said I wasn't out all night. I was driving and I saw this object going over Highland. Would you call Lebanon Police Department and tell them there is something heading their way. She did and she said she got hold of them and said she would let me know within about 10 minutes or whatever time they hear anything. So it was a few minutes later a police officer stopped in and told me they spotted it over Summerfield. The same thing I saw over Highland.

ABOUT HOW LONG DID YOU SEE IT?

From the first sighting, five minutes maybe.

WHAT ANGLE IN THE SKY WAS IT WHEN YOU FIRST NOTICED THE BRIGHT LIGHT?

It was about 45 degrees.

ABOUT HOW FAR AWAY WOULD YOU HAVE ESTIMATED IT.

To me it was flying about like a small aircraft would be flying. It would be down low. Something like a helicopter coming in to land like over at the hospital. That's the way, it could have been higher than like...

NOT ALTITUDE, BUT DISTANCE AWAY FROM YOU WHEN YOU FIRST SAW IT. WAS IT FIVE MILES OR TWENTY MILES?

No, it wasn't that far, I'd say it was within a mile.

WITHIN A MILE?

Yes, because I was right here over there at the golf course and when they seen it, it was over Summerfield. So if you take this diagram, so it couldn't have been over a mile, if that far. It was pretty close.

DID IT PASS OVER YOUR HEAD?

No, it passed to the south of me, on an angle like that.

SO IT WAS GOING…

From the northeast to the southwest

NORTHEAST TO SOUTHWEST.

So it was not very far from me. I would say not even a mile, I could see it so good. It looked like it was going over the southern part of Highland, like over Broadway, that's the way I was watching it. It was coming from the radio towers out here and that's the way it was going.

SHAPE. YOU SAID IT WAS…WHAT I FIRST HEARD OUT IN VEGAS WAS THAT IT WAS SHAPED LIKE A HOUSE, BUT I THINK THAT WAS JUST WHAT YOU WERE GIVING AS A REFERENCE.

Yes. I thought it was just like a house. A floating house like. With all the windows and it was tall and the length of it. I seen many lights underneath, red lights. One of the other people that seen it only saw one or two they thought. The only thing I wish is that there was another person with me.

THAT COULD CHANGE DEPENDING ON THE ANGLE YOU LOOKED AT IT.

But to me there were many bulbs of lights, red.

RED LIGHTS ALL THE WAY…

All the way around it (unintelligible) and there was one beacon in the front. And there was no lights behind it—no flashing lights, I mean just one light just as steady beam of light.

THAT WAS IN THE FRONT?

Yes, that was in the front. Showing it where it was going.

OK. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THAT LIGHT?

It would be a light something well, if you looked at a bright star, and when I first seen it that's what I thought it was. It was so steady, it wasn't doing this. (waving his hand in an up and down motion) it was just (unintelligible). That's why I looked again when I seen it. You know, I thought that can't be a star because it was too low. So I took another look at it and I just kept watching it. I could tell it was moving.

HOW FAST WOULD YOU SAY IT WAS MOVING?

Well, the picture that this guy took down in Millstadt, I think it was in Millstadt, was it wasn't yet 5:00 and I saw it at 4:00 so we tried to figure out the time, so I figure about 70 miles an hour. If you figure the mileage from where I seen it at and the picture at the bottom of the TV last night. So I figured from that picture that was taken in Millstadt until the time I seen it, you know I figured about 70 miles an hour. It was moving very slow.

WHAT WERE THE WEATHER CONDITIONS?

Just as clear and quiet.

CLEAR AND QUIET?

Cold and without me there wasn't a sound. There was nothing. That's what kind of scared me. Then I think it might of slowed down a little bit when I thought to myself “is that seeing me down here?”

THAT'S A NATURAL REACTION, SURE.

(Unitelligible with laughter.)

HOW HIGH WOULD YOU SAY IT WAS?

I would say it was a, oh maybe a half a mile, I would say. I mean it was …

DO YOU THINK IT WAS LOWER THAN WHAT AIRPLANES NORMALLY FLY?

Oh yes. Oh yes, it was something like how they fly a glider out of the airport up here. I don't think it was even that high, I don't believe.

OK

I showed the lady cop where I seen it and then I told her tree tops over there and that star up there, it was right in between there.

AND THE SHAPE AGAIN, YOU SAID WAS LIKE A …

To me it looked like it was a a big house up there and a to me it was just red lights like all around, underneath. They wan't all together, they was scattered out.

THE BODY OF IT HAD LIGHTS ALSO?

Yes. On the body, from the lights up it looked it was two to three floors high and there was many windows in it. And a very bright light coming out of there. I mean… Yeah…coming out of the windows. It was where I could have seen somebody looking out of the wihndow, I mean it was that close, or if somebody would walk through. There was windows like (unintelligible).

OK AND YOU SAY NO SOUND?

No. Very quiet. That's what scared me a little bit. Not a sound. It looked like a helicopter, pretty tall you know. This is, what is it?

SO YOU SAY IT WAS ABOUT MAYBE THREE STORIES HIGH, HOW WIDE WOULD YOU SAY IT WAS?

Oh, it was pretty good size, about the size of a football field I guess on the length of it. The width wasn't as wide, so it was pretty good size.

(Unintelligible background conversation and noise.)

THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL AGAIN…NORTHEAST TO

It was coming from the northeast and going southwest.

SOUTHWEST. OK

HOW DID IT DISAPPEAR FROM VIEW?

Well, it just a as it went over going across the tree tops out of Highland, the rear of it the lights were dim. There was windows but it was dim. I just stood there and watched it a little bit and it went just like an aiplane would be going straight. Then I just stood there a little bit after that. Then I could barely see it any more. I thought nobody would believe me. How am I going to tell somebody. So I got in my truck and went up to the police department and they called Lebanon right away. So it wasn't going very fast by that time that I went up there and Summerfield isn't very far and that took about 5 minutes. So they got ahold of me to tell me there was another sighting of it.

DID YOU NOTICE ANY PHYSICAL TRACES?

No (unintelligible with background noise). Nothing at that time of the morning and the cold and no noise.

HOW ABOUT THE TREES. AS IT PASSED OVER, DID YOU NOTICE ANY…

No, just nothing. That's what got me so quiet, I mean just like (unintelligible) and nothing moved and just….

WERE YOU IN YOUR TRUCK WHEN YOU SAW THIS?

No, I wasn't. I was outside of my truck and I ….

WAS YOUR TRUCK RUNNING?

No. No. I came in and I drive to Bloomington and I came back from Bloomington and I parked my big truck at Pocahontas and I live here in Highland, but I run a miniature golf course over here and I stopped in there to see if everything was all right because it was so cold that night. So when I got out of the truck I just happened to look over that way and I seen that bright star.

THIS WAS AT THE GOLF COURSE?

Yes. Right over here at the golf course. And I looked over there and I seen that very bright star. So I went on the inside and I came back out and I had a little trouble getting my key in the lock because it's so cold and it froze up. I was just playing with that a little because I had to get in on the other side up there when I got into my pickup truck when I was driving. So I was just looking over there and saw it moving, so then I just stood there and I just kept my eyes on it. You know, just watched as it was coming.

YOU WERE NEVER DIRECTLY UNDER IT?

No, it was at a slant like this.

I THINK YOU SAID LIKE A 45 DEGREE ANGLE?

Yeah, something like 45.

SO YOU COULD NOT SEE THE BOTTOM OF IT OR THE TOP?

No. I could only see the side view of it, but it was so close you could look under it and see all these lights. Now these lights are looking like they are light bulbs. You know. Big red light bulbs shining down. It wasn't all one solid light.

YOU SAID ABOUT 11 INCHES APART?

Yeah. Something like that. And the corners went on a slant, and it was just many red lights

AND THE LENGTH OF IT?

Something like a football field. It was long. Two to three stories high and then (unintelligible) it was just my idea.

DID IT LOOK SQUARE?

No it looked longer than wide.

LONGER. I'M NOT GETTING THAT PICTURE

OK, say it's 500 feet this way and then say 400 feet or three hundred feet the width this way. The way I was looking at it from the side it was wider. But I mean when I looked at it from the rear it looked like it wasn't as wide as it was tall. I wish there was somebody else there to see it.

WERE THERE ANY ANIMALS AROUND? A DOG OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT?

No. Just some cats that live out there on there own in different places.

YOU DIDN'T NOTICE THEM ACTING…

No. The town was so quiet. Even the train didn't run until I was talking to the city cop later on that evening, when she came out to see where it was at. We heard the train going through and seen an airplane going.

THIS WAS AFTERWARDS?

Yes.

ABOUT HOW LONG AFTERWARDS?

Maybe about 15 minutes after. The airplane was way over there. And they saw it over at Summerfield and they notified Scott [Air Force Base] they said. And Scott didn't want to even hear about it

DID YOU SEE ANY OTHER CRAFT IN THE SKY?

No. At that time all I saw was that going through. But it was way lower than the airplane was flying. It was lower.

QUITE AN EXPERIENCE, HUH?

Yes it is. It is something you heard about. I used to listen to Mr. Bell from Nevada from Midnight til 5 in the morning. He used to talk about it quite a bit. And you wonder you know if people really seen something. Until I seen this and what is it?

YOU'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE?

No. I've never seen nothing like it before. That's why I had to tell somebody. I had to go to the police station and let them notify somebody so they could be on the lookout for it. So they was looking for it in the sky.

DID IT MAKE ANY PECULIAR MOVEMENTS?

It went straight. It was like it was on a line ya know. It looked like it slowed down a little bit when it got right over the side of me. Maybe it just looked like it. But it's something you're just not ready for. It's something you'll never forget, I mean something like that.

I'M SURE YOU'LL NEVER FORGET IT.

No, I mean many of the people I talked to said like the lady policeman said she wished she would have been out on duty. But I think I probably wouldn't have seen it unless you would have been looking up in the sky.

COURSE IF IT CAME THAT CLOSE TO YOU IT WOULD BE HARD TO MISS...

(Unintelligible). How many people at 4 in the morning are looking at the sky?

WHAT IS NORTHEAST OF HERE?

Northeast of here. Ah, Greenville. If we had a state of Illinois map... I don't know if they have one here or not.

I HAVE A SMALL ONE.

(Garbled noise)

HERE'S GREENVILLE.

(looking at map some meaningless conversation attempting to find Highland on the map)

It looks like it was coming down I-70. Then it went over Highland, O'Fallon, Summerfield going in the direction of southwest. And when Summerfield said it was going to Scott, a small plane don't get into their airspace so that's why he notified Scott. Channel 2 tried to interview somebody there too last night.

DID YOU SEE THE CHANNEL 2 NEWSCAST?

Yes.

THE WHOLE THING?

Yes.

ABOUT HOW LONG WAS THE SPOT THEY DID ON THIS?

Oh, a couple of minutes. Just me and another person, a chief of police.

THEY INTERVIEWED YOU?

Yes. They didn't have time to come to Highland, so I had to meet them over at Lebanon.

And they was at Scott. They wanted to get it all done before 9:00. so they interviewed somebody over at O'Fallon, like the chief of police at O'Fallon. Then they went over to Scott and then they called me and wanted to know if I could meet them halfway, so Lebanon was halfway so that's where they interviewed me then. And then at 9:00 was the very first story they had on television.

OK, THE 9:00 NEWS CARRIED IT?

Yes. And 10. 10 carried a little bit of it but 9 carried it first.

IT WAS CHANNEL 2?

Yes.

AND YOU GOT CALLS FROM 4 AND 5?

The chief of police called me before they gave out my number to find out if it was all right for these other television stations to be calling. So he said 2, 4, and 5 would be calling. And 2 got ahold of me and 4 and 5 were going to call later on. I guess they thought 2 already had it (unintelligible).
