Sleeve Notes

Terror of the Zygons and The Seeds of Doom were respectively the first and last adventures of the thirteenth season of Doctor Who, transmitted from 30th August to 20th September 1975, and 31st January to 6th March 1976. The first (in four parts) told the story of a race of foetal aliens living in a crippled spacecraft beneath the waters of Loch Ness, and their attempt to conquer the Earth with the help of their pet monster, the Skarasen. The second (six parts) was a shocker concerning a pair of plant pods discovered under the Antarctic permafrost which, when they burst, infected the nearest human beings and slowly transformed them into grotesque animal plants.

Both stories are (despite the poorly-realised Loch Ness monster emerging from the river Thames!) compelling drama. With Tom Baker as the Doctor and Philip Hinchcliffe (producer) and Robert Holmes (script editor) at the helm, this era of the programme is known for its "gothic horror" content and attracted much attention from Mary Whitehouse's Viewers' and Listeners' Association. Taut scripting and committed playing makes some scenes in The Seeds of Doom especially truly horrifying (the unfortunate Keeler's agonising mutation is painful to watch).

Behind the scenes, these two stories also stand out for having the same core team in charge alongside Hinchcliffe and Holmes. Both were written by Robert Banks Stewart (who went on to create Shoestring and Bergerac) and directed by the ever-excellent Douglas Camfield, whose first Doctor Who assignment had been Planet of Giants, back in 1964's second season, and who returned to Doctor Who from The Sweeney. Camfield, for reasons of his own, chose not to work with the series' regular composer Dudley Simpson, and instead commissioned Geoffrey Burgon.

Geoffrey's style is very different to Dudley's, although both proved adept at producing terrific results from the show's meagre music budget. Dudley would create his "big" sound with a core ensemble of just a couple of horns, clarinet and bass clarinet, percussion and electric organ, while Geoffrey used a small chamber ensemble of five musicians playing a combination of flute, clarinet, harp, violin, cello, clavichord and percussion. All players were required to use every performance trick in the book, from flutter-tonguing and overblowing in the woodwind, to mutes, ponticello effects and harmonics in the strings. Electronic enhancements were added to the master tapes with the help of Dick Mills at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, specifically some synthesiser tones, and the treatment of some instruments by passing them through a ring modulator. The result is typically idiosyncratic, and utterly appropriate.

Geoffrey Burgon

Geoffrey Burgon entered the Guildhall School of Music with the intention of becoming a Jazz trumpeter. But the lure of composition, encouraged by his teacher, Peter Wishart, proved too strong, and at the age of 30 he decided to compose full time, selling his trumpets to underline the decision.

He composed prolifically for a number of years, until his 1976 Requiem received much critical acclaim and he gained a reputation as a serious composer to watch. Television producers took to his innovative and idiosyncratic style, and these early scores for Doctor Who were followed by classics such as Testament of Youth, Brideshead Revisited and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. He continues to alternate film and television commissions with works for the concert hall.

A Note on the Tapes

It is a sad fact that most tapes of music commissioned by broadcasting organisations such as the BBC up until fairly recently were not kept. Once the programmes were finished, the source tapes were no longer of any use, and noone considered the possibility that the music might be of interest in and of itself in future. The original masters of the music on this CD were no exception. Luckily, it was customary to make a listening copy of the music for the composer. The copies were made on poorer quality tape running at half-speed, and little regard was paid to the technical quality, but at least they were made! Digital technology has been used to clean up and restore the tapes for this release, and the original mono recordings have been placed in a subtle stereo space to add a bit of "air" to the sound. Some hiss and distortion remains, but should not detract too much from the enjoyment of the music. The Doctor Who theme itself has been restored from the original master tape.

Annotated Track List

Most TV and film scores consist of many short pieces of music. For the purposes of this CD, consecutive cues have been combined into longer tracks, the individual cues being identified by "index points" (displayed on players that read them) and indicated in these notes in square brackets with the corresponding track time.

Commentary

1

Doctor Who Opening Title Theme (0.32)

This version of the famous theme was recorded in 1969, and remained in use until 1980.

Terror of the Zygons
(30.04)

2

The Destruction of Charlie Rig (0.41)

Oil Rig "Bonnie Prince Charlie" lies in calm seas off the north east coast of Scotland. [2; 0.21] A mysterious force batters the rig, smashing it to pieces. (The last part of this cue underscored the landing of the TARDIS, a scene that was cut from the final transmitted episodes; if you listen closely to the video sound at this point, you can just hear the start of the TARDIS materialisation on the edit!).

3

A Landing in Scotland (1.22)

The Doctor, with companions Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, hitches a lift into the village of Tullock. (The start of this cue is unused in the transmitted episode as it covered the end of the cut TARDIS landing scene; but the entire cue was reused, in slightly remixed form, at the end of Part Four).

4

Murder and Mystery on Tulloch Moor (3.28)

Jock Munro, the Radio Operator from Charlie Rig, is washed ashore, barely alive. [2; 0.18] Sarah Jane is in conversation with Angus McRanald, landlord of the inn, unknowingly watched by the hidden Zygons through concealed cameras. [3; 0.50] Angus tells the story of two young boys who went missing on the moor. [4; 1.28] Harry finds Jock on the beach, but is shot at by the Caber, mysterious manservant to the Duke of Forgill.

5

Wreckage (1.18)

Sarah is at Harry's bedside, while the Doctor and the Brigadier examine the wreckage of Charlie Rig. [2; 0.53] The Doctor talks of "a monster of frightening size and power" attacking the rigs; while the Zygons watch from their hidden base.

6

The Zygons Attack (0.51)

Sarah leaves Harry's sickbed to telephone the Doctor. Harry starts recounting his meeting with Munro to Sister Lamont, then screams as he sees something in front of him. An alien hand reaches out for Sarah (end of Part One).

7

Decompression (1.09)

Searching for Sarah, the Doctor spots her slumped in a decompression chamber. [2; 0.40] The Doctor and Sarah are locked in by a Zygon, and the chamber starts to depressurise.

8

The Zygons' Ultimate Weapon (1.24)

Broton, Warlord of the Zygons, introduces the captured Harry to their "ultimate weapon", a massive sea monster called the Skarasen. [2; 1.05] The Zygon spacecraft rests on the bed of Loch Ness.

9

Trance (0.50)

In the decompression chamber, the Doctor puts himself and Sarah into a life-preserving trance.

10

False Harry (3.59)

Harry is shown a machine that enables the Zygons to take "body prints" and turn themselves into facsimile humans. (This cue is actually used twice, the first time at half speed). [2; 0.31] Sarah is alone at the inn; Harry, in truth a Zygon double, appears and demands Sarah hand over an alien device recovered from the wreckage. He pushes Sarah away and runs. [3; 1.12] Sarah pursues "Harry"...finally cornering him in a barn [4; 2.50] where he lunges at her with a pitchfork but falls and injures himself, reverting to his Zygon form.

11

Monster on the Moor (3.27)

Realising that the "trilanic activator" is a homing device, the Doctor takes it away from the village with the monster in hot pursuit...[2; 2.14] the monster towers over the Doctor, jaws agape (end of Part Two). [3; 2.47] Harry blunders into the Zygon control room and attacks their targeting system, distracting the monster from the Doctor.

12

Death at the Inn/Hunt for a Zygon (3.18)

McRanald is dusting a stag's head in the bar when its eye moves; he realises that it is a concealed camera. As he tries to remove it [2; 0.14], "Sister Lamont" enters and kills him. [3; 1.17] The Zygon has removed the camera, and UNIT soldiers are out searching. [4; 1.28] They spot the alien in the distance and shoot it. [5; 2.16] A wounded "Sister Lamont" comes out of the woods and kills a soldier who tries to help. (This last cue was also used, at half speed, in Part Four as Broton details his plans to the Doctor).

13

The Secret of Forgill Castle (1.44)

Sarah is researching the history of Loch Ness in the library at Forgill Castle when a hidden door opens. She follows a long corridor leading down into the Zygon spaceship under the Loch. [2; 1.13] She finds the body print machine with its human "originals" held captive in alcoves.

14

Ascent and Descent (1.28)

Under bombardment from UNIT, the Zygon Spaceship leaves Loch Ness (end of Part Three), eventually landing [2; 1.05] "just beyond Brentford, (in) a disused quarry". (The latter cue is reused later, as the dust settles after the Zygon ship blows up).

15

A Call from the Prime Minister (0.26)

The telephone rings - it's the Prime Minister to talk the Brigadier ("Absolutely understood, Madam" - this five years before Margaret Thatcher came to power).

16

To London/Death of Broton (2.55)

The Zygons think that the captured Doctor is dead, but they are wrong. [2; 0.31] After the Doctor has destroyed the spaceship he, with Sarah and UNIT, travels to London where they believe that the Zygons are planning an attack on an International Energy Conference. [3; 0.52] Broton is located in the basement of the conference centre; he is killed by UNIT soldiers and the trilanic activator is recovered.

17

The Monster Goes Home (1.10)

The Loch Ness monster appears in the Thames, summoned by the activator, which it eats before returning to Loch Ness [2; 0.46], "the only home he knows". (The latter cue was unused in the final soundtrack).

18

Return Ticket (0.23)

The Doctor and Sarah depart in the TARDIS, watched by the Brigadier, Harry, and a bemused Duke of Forgill. (Unused in final soundtrack).

The Seeds of Doom
(46.44)

19

Antarctica: The First Pod (2.20)

A scientific mission from the World Ecology Bureau finds a mysterious vegetable pod under the Antarctic ice. [2; 1.19] John Stevenson is sure that the pod is still alive.

20

"It's Growing!" (1.02)

The pod has grown. Stevenson is sure they are on to a major discovery.

21

Harrison Chase (0.42)

The disaffected Mr Dunbar visits eccentric millionaire plant collector Harrison Chase in his mansion and hands over information concerning the discovery of the pod.

22

The Pod Opens (1.12)

The pod opens and a tendril emerges and attaches to Charles Winlett. His colleagues come to investigate. (The last part of this cue was not used, replaced in part with a "sting" from elsewhere in the score).

23

The Galactic Weed (2.00)

Having arrived at the base with Sarah, the Doctor has discovered a second pod and examines Winlett - the infection is accelerating. A sample of his blood [2; 0.33] contains plant bacteria. [3; 1.09] The Doctor describes the krynoids to Sarah - "a galactic weed...on planets where the krynoid gets established, the vegetation eats the animals".

24

The Creature Attacks (0.39)

Winlett, now more plant than animal, kills his colleague Moberley and leaves the camp (end of Part One).

25

A Plan for Murder/Hunt in the Snow (2.47)

Chase has sent two employees to Antarctica. The mercenary Scorby shocks timid botanist Keeler with his violent plans for retrieving the pod. [2; 0.51] In the empty sick bay, the Doctor describes the process of mutation from man to krynoid while [3; 1.36] a search of the nearby power generator plant reveals no trace of the creature.

26

Sabotage (1.40)

The Doctor searches for the hostage Sarah. The Krynoid kills Stevenson while Scorby and Keeler leave in their plane. [2; 0.43] The Krynoid is on the rampage as the Doctor releases Sarah; Scorby's bomb blows the camp to pieces, taking the Krynoid with it (end of Part Two).

27

Chase Receives the Second Pod (1.08)

Scorby and Keeler deliver the second pod to a delighted Harrison Chase. Dunbar arrives and is appalled at the carnage in Antarctica.

28

The Chauffeur Takes a Detour (1.28)

The Doctor and Sarah have returned to London. Dunbar arranges a chauffeur to take them from the World Ecology Bureau to the Botanic Institute by way of "a nice deserted spot" where they have to fight for their lives.

29

A Visit to Harrison Chase (2.11)

The Doctor and Sarah arrive at Chase's mansion in the chauffeur's Daimler and are let in by the unsuspecting gatekeeper. [2; 0.52] They are challenged by the guards and eventually caught by Scorby.

30

The Hymn of the Plants/Floriana Requiem (1.22)

In his "Green Cathedral", Chase performs "The Hymn of the Plants" ("I composed it myself") and "The Floriana Requiem", ("dedicated to Linnaeus").

31

Escape and Recapture (2.37)

Scorby is escorting the Doctor and Sarah away when they make a break for it. [2; 1.37] The Doctor drops Sarah over the garden wall...but [3; 2.31] she is soon recaptured.

32

The Second Pod Bursts (0.51)

Chase holds Sarah's arm in front of the opening Krynoid pod (end of Part Three); the Doctor crashes through the skylight to the rescue, but [2; 0.34] the pod opens and the plant attaches itself to the hapless Keeler.

33

Keeler's Transformation Begins (0.56)

To Chase's fascination, Keeler's body starts to change; the Doctor, yet again creeping through the mansion, is spotted by Scorby.

34

The Composter (1.05)

Scorby takes the Doctor into a room where he is beaten and shown an enormous pulping machine: "did you know we made our own compost?".

35

The Nurturing of Keeler (4.33)

Sarah is left in the garden at night. Meanwhile Keeler has been removed to a cottage in the grounds where [2; 2.25] Sarah finds him. She has to hide [3; 3:14] as some food is brought for the patient. In the house, Chase receives a visitor, the eccentric flower artist Amelia Ducat. Later [4; 3.54] Amelia departs and Sarah leaves Keeler sleeping.

36

"Get Dunbar!"/Krynoid on the Loose (2.54)

Amelia meets up with Dunbar and his superior, Sir Colin Thackeray. [2; 0.22] Chase sends Scorby after the remorseful Dunbar, who runs straight into the path of the escaped eight-foot Krynoid (end of Part Four). [3; 1.49] Scorby and his men attack the Krynoid then retreat to the cottage with Sarah and the Doctor, whom Sarah has rescued. Here [4; 2.16] they discuss their plight. (The latter two cues have been slightly edited here).

37

Amelia Ducat's Theme (0.45)

An exasperated Sir Colin finally bids farewell to Miss Ducat, who is thoroughly enjoying her undercover activities. (Only the last few seconds of this charming cue were actually used in the final programme).

38

Molotov Cocktail (1.26)

The rapidly-growing Krynoid is outside the cottage; inside, the Doctor and Scorby ready their weapons. [2; 0.13] Chase is in the garden with his camera. Scorby starts to attack the Krynoid and the Doctor runs out and escapes in the Daimler. The Krynoid follows him.

39

"The Plants Must Win" (2.28)

Harrison Chase takes photographs of the Krynoid while [2; 1.18] in the house, vines break the window of the laboratory. [3; 1.39] Sarah and Scorby find a strangled guard in the garden then meet the clearly possessed Chase.

40

The Plants Attack (2.54)

In the greenhouse, Chase has become one with the plants, which start to attack the humans. [2; 0.50] The Doctor returns with a UNIT soldier and a large quantity of defoliant. They rescue Sarah and Scorby but Chase eludes them.

41

Laser Fire (1.26)

Chase locks the Doctor and company out of the house with the Krynoid (end of Part Five), as [2; 0.40] Major Beresford arrives with a contingent of UNIT soldiers and a laser gun, which is near-useless against the creature.

42

Trapped (2.13)

Chase emerges from hiding and reenters the laboratory where he finds the empty defoliant bottles and smashes the radio. [2; 1.03] Scorby tries to escape, but is killed.

43

The Final Assault (3.51)

Sarah enters the composter room and is caught by Chase. [2; 0.43] Beresford has ordered an air strike, and the planes are on their way as Chase turns on the composter with Sarah inside. [3; 1.08] The Doctor rescues Sarah and in the ensuing struggle it is Chase who falls prey to the machine. [4; 2.09] Using steam from the overheating boiler, the Doctor and Sarah fight their way through the vegetation as the Bombers attack and destroy both house and Krynoid.

The Masters and the Cue Sheets

OK, this is minutiae gone mad. But I had to do this research in order to compile the CD; I built a database as I went, and FileMaker Pro can export an HTML Table, so why not!

The following tables list each music cue used in the original episodes, whether it's a reuse or treatment of another cue, and cross-references to the CD. You'll notice that not every cue is on the CD. This is of course mainly down to time constraints.

The fields:

  • Cue and Start. The number of the music cue in the programme. Number is my numbering through each serial. For Terror of the Zygons, time is from start of part one on BBC Video BBCV6774, 1999. For The Seeds of Doom, timing is from start of part one on a continuous off-air video I have access to.
  • Title is mine for reference
  • Dur (Duration) Length of cue
  • Tk/Ind. The track and index point on the CD where you can find this cue.
