Gardner
Wins 2000 Sullivan Award
Orlando,
Fla. --Former University of Nebraska wrestler Rulon
Gardner won the James E. Sullivan Award Monday. The
award is presented to the nation's outstanding amateur
athlete by the AAU. Gardner captured the attention of
the nation last summer with his dramitic 1-0 overtime
victory over Russia's Alexander Kareline to take the
Greco-Roman heavyweight gold medal in Sydney. Karelin,
who had taken the previous three gold medals in the
event, had never lost an international match before
Gardner's amazing upset. At Nebraska, Gardner led a
Husker attack in 1993 that finished third at the NCAA
Championships, the best finish in school history. An
All-American in 1993, he posted a career record of 58-15-2
while at NU. Gardner becomes the third wrestler to win
the Sullivan Award, joining freestyle stars John Smith
in 1990 and Bruce Baumgartner in 1995. (click
