The Story

My name is Aaron Swartz. I'm a 9th grader at the North Shore Country Day School. In the summer of 2000, I finally realized that school wasn't working. I decided to do something about it.

It's time for a change. The rebellion is coming. I've decided to join the war and fight to change my school. I'm tired of outdated teaching practices where the students don't learn anything. I'm tired of constantly being prepared for more preparation. I want something new, something worthwhile, something better.

Kids are the most valuable asset we have. They deserve something better than endlessly slaving away at mindless tasks that rot their brain. Seriously, who really cares how long the Nile river is, or who was the first to discover cheese. How is memorizing that ever going to help anyone?

Instead, we need to give kids projects that allow them to exercise their minds and discover things for themselves. Instead of stuffing them with "knowledge" we need to give them the power to find out what they want to know. We need to have them ask the big questions -- who am I and what am I doing here? -- rather than worrying about whether they'll get an A or a B on their next assignment.

That's why I've taken on the fight to change my school. I'll chronicle my story here on this website. I'll update it daily with the latest information about the struggle. I hope that other students can learn from my example and begin to do the same at their own schools. We are the students. We have the power. We will fight.
