Timbers add two players, lose Kelly

Tuesday, May 1, 2001

Help is on the way for the Portland Timbers.

Defender Jeff Clarke and midfielder Michael O'Neill are expected to join the A-League team this week in time for road games Saturday against Utah and Sunday against Northern Nevada.

Clarke is expected any day because his indoor team, the Baltimore Blast, was eliminated from the National Professional Soccer League playoffs Sunday.

"We want him to get here as soon as possible," Timbers coach Bobby Howe said Monday.

O'Neill's arrival from Scotland, via London, has been delayed again. There was a chance he was going to arrive by today, Howe said, but he now is expected Thursday or Friday.

Meanwhile, the Timbers had to send the player who scored their only goal in Saturday's season opener back to his Major League Soccer club.

Midfielder Brian Kelly joined the Timbers in El Paso on Friday on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy. He scored in the 21st minute, giving Portland a 1-0 lead, before El Paso rallied to win 2-1 in overtime. Kelly rejoined his MLS team Sunday.

"We were able to get him on a one-game loan, which worked out well," Howe said. "But he had to go back the next morning. He might come back and play for us again, though. We'll see."
