Author's Notes for: Turn Back Time

Author's Warning: DO NOT read these notes unless you've already read "Turn Back Time". These notes will spoil the story if you haven't read it yet! Hi everyone! Maybe I should have thought about it. Now, apparently, "Turn Back Time" is the greatest Pokemon fanfic ever written. Yeesh. What did I do to deserve this? :) At least once a month I get a letter from someone telling me they read "Turn Back Time" and it was just the best thing they've ever read. Honestly, even I was surprised at the amount of feedback I've gotten from this one story alone. But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. When I set out to write a decent fic (or attempt to anyway ^_~), I grab a notebook that either has been used and I've torn out the pages that have been written on (usually left over school notebooks from years before), or I grab a notebook I'm currently using, and if one isn't available, I go out and buy one. I don't use loose-leaf (notebook) paper. In the past, I've found it can get lost very easily, plus it's nice to keep the story altogether, and very easy to carry around. A note to fellow authors: If you do use notebooks, ones that are wirebound, but have perforated lines for easy tear out pages I have found are the ultimate in writer's best friends. :) The ones that don't have perforated lines seem only to make a mess later when you tear the pages from the wire rings. Just a suggestion though. Once I've written out the fanfic on notebook paper, and edited to my satisfaction, I tear out the pages, and when I get the time, type the story up on my computer. Then I archive the written story (the original handwritten version) in a three ring notebook along with my other Pokemon fanfics, organized by type of fanfic, to use as a reference for later. Very handy! Why did I just tell you all that? Because for Turn Back Time, I didn't use ANYTHING but the computer. I was SO eager to get this fanfic typed up (especially Chapter 3) and sent out that I didn't see a point in going through the whole notebook thing, although it is nice. :) Now, let's explore the three chapters separately, shall we? Chapter One: Misty, Ash, and Kenji (Tracey in the American dub) are lost. Misty and Ash have a fight. A terrible one at that. Ash stalks off, Misty gets bitten by an Arbok, (which is NOT Team Rocket's Pokemon; this one is a wild one.). Misty is poisoned, and Ash runs back to her. Misty and Ash admit they love one another, and, like any good heroine, Misty promptly dies, thus ending Chapter One. Ok, so it isn't the most original idea in the world. In fact it's the LEAST original idea. But there's nothing new under the sun, so I decided to use this concept, and twist it to my advantage. When I first wrote this, Kenji hadn't been given an Americanized name yet, (as far I knew), so I just kept it Kenji. Besides, Kenji's a cool name. Let's head onto Chapter Two. Chapter Two: Scene change, a few hours later. Ash and Kenji have brought Misty (yes, she's still dead ^_^) to the police station in a town miles away, where she's rushed off to the coroner's office, while the boys are interviewed by an Officer Jenny. The boys tell her exactly what happened, and of course, they aren't at fault according to the law. However, when Misty's sisters arrive, demanding justice, Ash begins to blame himself. The chapter ends when Lily, Misty's sister, punches Ash in the face, and he gets rushed off to the hospital. Ah, agony! It's so much fun! I'm not sure what to say about this chapter, except that I had no trouble at all writing it. To this day, I can actually picture so vividly Lily punching Ash it sort of scares me. I'm just evil I tell ya! Chapter Three: Scene change, a year later. Misty, deader than a doornail, has been buried in a little cemetery just outside Cerulean City. (Originally, and you might have noticed this, I put she was buried near Pallet Town, Ash's hometown! Big oops on my part! I changed it though.) Ash, who had been in a coma after smashing into a wall from the impact of Lily hitting him (ok, so a little stretch of the imagination is needed here), woke up, and discovered what he thought was a dream, really wasn't. Misty really was dead, and Togepi, heartbroken, soon followed its master to the grave. When I reached the end of Chapter Two, I got a load of fan mail begging me to write Chapter Three. Everyone was dying (hehe, no pun intended) to know what happened. I basically had three options. 1) Kill off Ash, and let him and Misty figure out their feelings in the afterlife. 2) Bring Misty back from the dead, ala "it was only a dream!". Ick, no - tacky, pointless, and if nothing else, STUPID. 3) Bring Ash out of the coma, find Misty still dead, and let him suffer. So what to do, what to do? Hm, I don't think number three has been done yet, let's try that! I reviewed all my options carefully.
Every time I decided on one, I went through the chapter mentally, and if
it didn't work out, I'd scrap it. When I got to number three though,
something clicked. The first few sentences came through my head as I
walked home from school. "The chilly November wind whipped around me,
the leaves scurrying through the air The response, readers, was
absolutely incredible. I'd never seen the likes of it. None of my
other fanfics have ever gotten this much attention at all! Listen to
this:
'I finally got around to reading this story and I have to tell you
it's one of the best "Go-on-without-me" stories I've read. The first
parts weren't that exciting, but the third part is by far the best. I got all
misty-eyed halfway through it and was crying by the end. It's rare the fics
that make me do that because I get pretty cynical about the soppy ones!'
Man, if I can do that to a cynic, imagine what I can do to the
people who aren't cynics!
Recently, some people have been begging me for a sequel to Turn Back
Time:
'I LOVED the story, "Turn Back Time"... I made me cry for hours on end.... Could you PLEASE for me, finish it to were Ash dies and and a few years while he's dead.. Please, i've gotta read more.... <starts to cry more> Please...' I think my reply was something like: "I don't plan on creating a sequel or another ending, sorry." And this person's reply: 'But, I would LOVE to read more of that story!!! It reminded of when my friend got killed... <sniffs> But, if the story continue's, does Ash die?' Sigh. I'm sorry about your friend, but your comments aren't going to sway my decision. And that's my final answer. Truth be told, this ending, the one posted, is NOT the original ending to the story. This is actually an alternative to the original. So where, you ask, is the original ending? You won't find it posted on any fanfic sites, I assure you. I started to write the original ending, one of a completely different nature, but one that would give the title of the story more of a meaning. And then I stopped. Something didn't seem right. I couldn't figure out what it was, but somehow the original ending just didn't want to go past a few paragraphs. With regret, I put that aside, and a few days later, the alternate ending came along. Maybe one day I'll go back and finish it. Maybe. Just for the record, head over to my Miscellaneous Rant #2 to see a flame about my fanfics, with regards to Turn Back Time... ~ Arina
