3D Realms E3 Pictures
5/23/01 15:01 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
As promised, the folks at 3D Realms have put up their own batch of pictures from this year's E3 event. If you think you've seen everything, well, you really haven't until you've seen these. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead, click here, and enjoy the eye-candy!

This first batch are just the pictures from Joe Siegler and others who had cameras. The second batch, which will come later in the week are from George Broussard. George went mad with his camera, took several thousand pictures, totalling over 4 GIGS of files. It's going to take slightly longer to plow through all of those to pick out what we want to post online.

Thanks to sTalking goat for this err... interesting news on some goings on with Max Payne. Seems some package deliveries are being sent around the country, anyway here's what he had to say:
I work at a UPS hub in downtown ******* (Ed. names changed to protect the innocent). Today to boxes came through the transfer belt with decals featuring Max Payne (the black and red logo of him holding a gun you see on the main page of maxpayne.com) covering the the tops. The were bound for 'Gathering of Developers' an address in Texas (attn: Edward somebody) , and came from 'Interactive Software' an address in on Broadway in downtown New York. Scrawled on the top of both boxes were the words Box of 6, 250 pieces each. The boxes were pretty heavy about 55 lbs and had a kind of plastic rattle if you shook them.

They were probably just decals, but one of the guys I work with thinks it might have been CDs. It probably doesn't mean anything, but I thought you might be interested.
Two boxes of 1500 somethings that rattle, hrrrm. Well if they arrive broken GoD may know why now. Remember we are watching you!

Hype Editorial
5/23/01 4:05 PST | Community News |
Lucky
3D Action Planet has smacked up a new editorial about hype. You know what? Our dear little Duke is mentioned, as well as DooM 3 and, oh yes, Daikatana. Here's a lush piece:
More companies seem to be taking the route of less hype these days; 3D Realms themselves have been incredibly close-guarded over Duke Nukem Forever. Most of the hype has come from the fans of the original. It seems a game that had a successful prequel is almost self-hyping. The fans demand information and obviously, all the game company is going to give them is candy-coated hype.
Go here to check it out before I hype it further! ;)

Duke It Out!
5/21/01 12:49 PST | Community News |
Lucky
It's time for Duke to kick some ass, or, perhaps this week, have has ass whupped by a Lightsabre. That's right - it's Duke Vs. Luke, that dude from Star Wars. Who'll win? Vote on the poll on the right!

Last week saw Duke take on Angel, who, rather like myself, wears a long black coat, avoids the sunlight and bites girls' necks. But Duke beat his ass into a frothy pulp. Here's the results, darling:

Duke: 88.5%
Angel: 11.5%
As usual, any ideas can go this way!

DNF Video Article
5/20/01 10:46 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Lucky
Because we love you so (no, not in that way), we've done an article on the E3 video. Even if you've watched it millions of times already - God knows we have - the article will clear up a few things about the video. Here's a quote:
Yes, Duke's main selling point is the interactivity - in the video he pushes buttons on a vending machine to buy a sandwich - and we see a pinball table being played. Who knows what Duke'll be able to do when he walks into a casino? :) We also see The Man riding a variety of vehicles - and even a mule. He interacts with NPCs, too, though that is a standard in any decent FPS games now and isn't too shocking.

More interesting yet is Duke being able to pick things up like an EDF guard's shield and use it for his own defence. Gun turrets also appear in the video - and anything, terrain notwithstanding, can be either used or destroyed. It's not Red Faction - you generally won't be able to blow down walls with your rocket launcher to progress - but any object will be easy to trash.

The article also has an assload of cool captures from the hi-res version, so now there's no excuse not to know all about the Duke video ;) Go read it here!

No Pay, No Play!
5/20/01 20:52 PST | Community News |
Abe Rahey
Taking a break from all this E3 and Duke Nukem Forever goodness, CitizenC & Hellchick have a point/counter-point article up at the 3D Action Planet that deals with the pay-to-play games such as EverQuest, Ultima Online, and Asheron's Call. Here's a snip:

But that's my point: What if you don't want all the new content? I've always been curious about EverQuest (I hear people talking about it all the time) ... but the only thing that is stopping me from buying it is because I don't feel comfortable having to pay more per month for a game. If I want the extra stuff, give me the choice. After I'm done playing through the stock maps, send me a message that says "Woops, you're out of the basic stuff. Do you want more? Only $10." If I enjoyed the game, I am more likely to click "Yes, Give It To Me".
Does the pay-to-play plan actually work? Read about their pros and cons here.

Game Info from the E3 Video
5/18/01 16:12 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
The Duke Nukem Center has put up a brief list of game-information they derived from the DNF E3 video. Here's a snip:

  • Driveable Vehicles are in - Duke is seen driving a motor cycle and what appears to be some sort of hovering vehicle.
  • Lip-Sync is in - Characters move their lips in sync with what they are saying.
  • Interactivity - Duke is seen playing on a pinball machine and interacting with numerous buttons, he also appears to be using a vending machine in one sequence.

3D Realms is off to E3
5/15/01 20:44 PST | Community News |
Abe Rahey
3D Realms' Scott Miller just updated his .plan file with word that they will be heading off to E3 tomorrow. He also mentioned that CNN will be covering E3 (as usual) as well as the DNF Video:
The DNF and Max videos will be available on the Internet May 17th, the first day of the E3 show, so for those fans not at the show, we didn't want to leave you out of the fun. Also, CNN requested and received a copy of both videos, so they might appear (in part) on TV, too. (CNN usually has decent coverage of E3.)

Webisodic Duke : Manhattan Project Distribution
5/15/01 11:35 PST | Other Duke Games |
Lucky
Just got word from ARUSH Entertainment that they've released details on how the Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project and other "Webisodic" games will be released - by using their GameCapsule system. Here's the dirt:
The patent-pending, non-intrusive GameCapsule acts as a digital "wrapper" for Web video games, offering simplified downloads and installs to consumers and giving them detailed game information, updates and the opportunity to purchase other titles with the click of a button. Users download a game from the Web and can then play it at any time, whether they are connected to the Internet or not.
This means that us poor souls with dial-ups can download installments pretty easily, too ;) Check out the ARUSH site for more!

E3 2001 Talk
5/14/01 16:43 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
Just noticed over at the Shack that the folks at Wired News have put up an article about E3 (which takes place in a few days). Apparently, according to them, the Microsoft XBox will steal the show. Well, we'll see about that! Here's what they said regarding Duke:
This will be the grand coming out party for Duke Nukem Forever; and its developer, 3D Realms, is counting on maximum attention. "I think Duke and Max Payne will garner more than their share of positive attention, and I hope that Doom 3 doesn't make an appearance. It would steal the show," said 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller.

Duke On GameCube, Gameboy Advance
5/14/01 11:33 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Lucky
Spotted at VoodooExtreme that Take 2 Interactive (European publishers of Duke Forever) have put forward this press release on DNF appearing on the GameCube and a Duke game for the Gameboy Advance:
Titles for NINTENDO GAMECUBE include Duke Nukem Forever, the highly anticipated sequel to the PC blockbuster Duke Nukem 3D from game developer 3D Realms. Take-Two also intends to develop a title based on the Duke Nukem franchise for release on the Game Boy Advance. Titles based on the franchise will be published by the Rockstar Games label.

Duke Nukem products have sold more than $120 million worldwide since the launch of Duke Nukem 3D in 1995, making Duke Nukem one of the most commercially successful product franchises in gaming history.

``Take-Two is extremely excited to bring the popular Duke Nukem franchise to the next-generation hardware systems from Nintendo,'' said Kelly Sumner, Chief Executive Officer. ``The new high-performance hardware systems and Duke Nukem's overwhelming appeal will make for an explosive combination.''

Duke Forever E3 Video
5/12/01 10:44 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Lucky
3D Realms webmaster Joe Siegler cleared up a few things over the new E3 video's distribution, next Thursday no less, in this forum thread:
There will be four files available - they all contain the same content, but they're different formats and sizes. There will be two (one high quality, one low quality) Bink video files, and two Quicktime video files (one HQ, one LQ). The High quality files are around 43Mb each, and the lower quality bink is about 15, and the lower quality Quicktime is around 23Mb.
Note that you shouldn't need any additional utilities to run the Bink files should you choose to download them. We'll slap up a list of download links here as soon as the files are available, natch :)

Duke is Evil!
5/12/01 2:23 PST | Community News |
MrBlonde
Well after several hours of sweaty toil at the grindstone I've managed to get a final tally of results from last weeks poll! Okay, well I just clicked the results button but it hurt all the same. Last weeks question "Do you think Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project will be a success?" gave a suprising result, most of you don't know what it is! Thankfully of those who do understand English (we covered it during the last week) or weren't clicking randomly, seem to think a bit of episodic Dukeness would be cool.
Do you think Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project will be a success?

Total votes: 193
Yes - 30.1%
No - 11.9%
Err... what? - 58%
Duke is a good guy, well he saves the world anyway. But what if he were truely evil, what would Duke want to do most with his evilness? Vote in this weeks poll; If Duke were evil his aim would be...

ARUSH Interview
5/10/01 12:45 PST | Other Duke Games |
Cyborg
ARUSH Entertainment, the guys doing the Duke Nukem episodic game, have recently had an interview with the guys at Stomped:
Finally, it looks like there is the potential for a lot of Duke Nukem games coming out in the next 12 months or so (Duke Nukem Forever, Duke Nukem PS2, Duke Nukem: Endangered Species). Is there pressure to make Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project a game that will be able to stand up to the quality that the other Duke games are striving for?

First and foremost, we want to make this an extremely fun game to play, as well as make it very visually appealing. Although it will not be a 700 MB game, it will amaze you to find out how suberbly crafted it will be and still be sized for a convenient downloaded. We want to woo back casual gamers while extending our hand to core Duke fans; it is not an easy task to undertake, but quality and gameplay are not sacrificed. Neither 3D Realms nor ARUSH would have it any other way.
And don't forget to read our interview too! (Don't mind this, I'm trying to beat Lucky at ridiculously long links).

Noticed on Voodoo Extreme.

Scott Miller Interview
5/7/01 12:22 PST | Community News |
Lucky
Planet GeForce (no relation ;) have collared Scott Miller for an interview on general gaming, extremely vague DNF subjects (D'oh!), and the gaming industry. Here's a quote:
PGF: Duke Nukem Forever has been the subject of ridicule due to it's long development period. What do you have to say in response to this criticism?

SM: I remember John Cameron being ridiculed from going way over schedule and budget on the making of Titanic–the studio even tried to cancel the movie. People only ridicule when they don’t have all the facts and knowledge of those on the inside.

PGF: Are there any other games being developed by your company which you are excited about?

SM: I can’t speak for others here, but I’m looking forward to Warcraft 3 and the Wolfenstein sequel.

You can read the whole thing here!

Lucky
3D Action Planet has a new article by Hellchick up, from her Q3DMHellchick series - this one deals with copyright infringement in mods. Here's a snippet containing some cancelled-Duke-mod fun:
The most common of all accusations from gamers, however, is money: "they're just being greedy." Those who say this should stop and think about what they're really saying, which is that they don't want the company to stay in business. If 3D Realms, for instance, allowed Duke Nukem content to be used in the Q3A engine, they clearly don't profit from it because then you could play Duke Nukem without having bought it. In fact, they could lose money because people would perhaps buy Q3A so they could get two games in one. Most gamers say that a company like 3D Realms should be flattered that someone would want to take the content and port it to a more modern engine.
Intrigued? Go read!

GOD Staffer Doug Myres Dies
5/4/01 14:27 PST | Community News |
Lucky
Sad news today as Doug Myres Jr., one of the Gathering of Developers team, died at the untimely age of just 36. Over at the GOD site they've gotten a few fond memories rounded up of the guy, who was probably best known to us as having been working on the Duke Forever E3 video recently (he's the guy in this making-of-the-video shot). This post probably seems trivial compared to how his friends and family must be feeling, but the PlanetDuke staff would like to offer our deepest sympathies to anyone who has known Doug.

GOD's E3 Lineup
5/4/01 11:17 PST | Community News |
Lucky
Over on Voodoo Extreme, they've gotten their grubby little mitts on what the Gathering of Developers (publishers of DNF and Max Payne) will be parading at E3. Well, it confirms that The Duke and Max Payne will indeed be shown:
Duke Nukem Forever -- Developed by 3D Realms
Taking place in and around Las Vegas, Duke Nukem Forever is the next game in the incredibly popular Duke Nukem series and will feature Duke's infamous off-the-wall wisecracks. This title is being developed for the PC and will be released in the second half of 2001.

Max Payne -- Developed by 3D Realms and Remedy Entertainment.
This 3D third-person action title puts gamers in the shoes of Max Payne, a hardboiled, fugitive undercover cop who is being framed for the murder of his boss. Max Payne will be released in July 2001 for the PC.

But then again, all our faithful readers would have known all that, wouldn't they? ;)

What kind of underwear does Duke use?

Mighty, tighty, whiteys - 13.3%
Thong - 8.8%
Shorts - 16.3%
Nothing, he goes Commando! - 61.7%
A whopping 707 of you voted with 436 of you thinking the Duke wears nothing under his pants (chaffage!). This weeks poll question is; Do you think Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project will be a success?. Answers as ever in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

DNF E3 Video Progress

George Broussard posted, in the 3D Realms forums, how the E3 video is coming along:
Well we recorded the video footage. It took us about 3-4 hours, then we went to dinner. We came back and were about to rip the shots from the digital video, when we noticed - the sound was all too low. DOH! In our excitement to record footage, we neglected to check the sound levels. Sigh...

At 3am we finished re-recording all the footage...again :) But it went faster since we had a dry run.

We ripped shots from one hour of tape and we'll do the second hour tomorrow. We're going to have a lot more shots than can fit in the video, but it's always good to have more.

The guys from Gathering that are editing the video have their equipment setup in our conference room. We'll be working closely with them Tuesday to cut the video together, then we hope to polish/tweak it and be done Wednesday.

Looks like the video will be good if even the team recording it are so excited ;)

Duke Forever Tech

Those crazy kids over at GameSpot have an article up about games that use technology to never-before-seen limits. Well, spank my ass and call me Mary, Duke Forever gets a hefty mention! Here's a quote, chums:
But the main selling point is that the Duke's latest adventure could be the action game that does for the Unreal Tournament engine what Half-Life did for the Quake II engine or what Elite Force did for the Quake III engine--expand the original engine's capabilities in unexpected ways. Sure, the action role-playing game Deus Ex already pulled off a number of impressive feats with the UT engine, but Scott Miller, one of 3D Realms' founders, says that Duke Nukem Forever's modifications go further. He proudly boasts, "For the past year, I've joked that Unreal licensees should be licensing from us, not Epic, because our version of the code is much faster and more feature packed.
The article also has the juice on Max Payne technology, too, so go here to look at it with your eyes!

New glDuke Release

MrBlonde
The latest version of the popular engine upgrade to Duke 3D, glDuke has received a brand new update. With this release they've also gone all Open-Source on us, so the xBUILD SDK is available.
After a lengthy period in the wilderness, with no new releases or updates, there is finally a new release of glDuke. The code is completely rewritten and is much more stable than the original release. As well as the release of v0.20, an xBUILD Renderer SDK has been released which should allow others to modify the existing engine as glDuke has now become open-source.

More information can be found at the VAPPS site and the official glDuke site. If you have any comments, please make them at the official glDuke forums and do not directly contact the authors.

This long awaited project, started in the summer of 2000, has finally been finished. For those of you not familiar with the project the objective was to create a Duke3D map composed of the best bits of other maps made by a wide range of authors. The end result is availble for your consumption here. But the news doesn't end there: oh no. For in the pipeline is another similar project. If you're interested in seeing what's happening read about it here.
