There's No Phantom At THIS Opera
Similar to Action Half-Life, The Opera is like an action movie on your
PC. Kahless chats with Springer about it.
- Chris "Kahless"
Steadman | May 12, 2001
How many times have you've found yourself siting on the couch watching Chow
Yun-Fat fly across the screen with duel berretas in hand taking out bad guy
after bad guy and thought to yourself, "I bet I could do that". Now
you have the chance in "The Opera", where you get to take on the roll
of your favorite Hong Kong action star.
3DActionPlanet: Thanks for taking the time to talk to me
Springer: No trouble at all, gives me an excuse to do something else :)
3DActionPlanet: For those of us have never heard of the opera could you please tell us a bit about it .
Springer: Sure, The Opera is a total conversion for Half Life, based on the Heroic Bloodshed or "Blood Opera" genre of films, such as those made by John Woo, Ringo Lam and so on. Release One of The Opera is to be a multiplayer fare in which players face each other in a serious of "duels". We have no heavy weapons of anykind, instead using only pistols, shotguns, light submachine guns and the other kinds of weapons you would expect from a Blood Opera film. We also have a dramatic stunt system which allows players to avoid fire through a series of cinamatic moves, as well as a number of other features, so many I can't remember, that are all listed on the website :D
3DActionPlanet: Are you yourself a big fan of Hong Kong blood operas?
Springer: Yeah I'm a huge fan of Hong Kong cinema in general especially, more recently, Wong Kar Wai's films. Which are mostly love stories :O I think that's grounds for me to be fired from the development team ^_^
3DActionPlanet: What is it about Hong Kong cinema that you like so much. And how did you hook up with the team?
Springer: What I like about Hong Kong cinema is that it hasn't "sold out" completely like Hollywood. Films like Wong Kar Wai's "Chungking Express" feel really magical. As for HK action, you'll never find anything more high octane than "The Killer" or "Hard Boiled", or with half as much style. Hooking up with the team was a long process and I only joined fairly recently. I was a fan on the message boards for a while, I began to work on the OperaNet fan site with Gecko too. Then after a while, I got accepted to be a beta tester. When I showed an interest MP_Lennon, one of the skinners, helped me learn some good skinning techniques. I posted an example on the beta boards and was quite eerily accepted. Lennon was a big factor in it.
3DActionPlanet: What are some of the modes of gameplay that we can expect?
Springer: Well the thing just announced is that for Release One, we're really cutting down on that kind of thing to make everyone happy. Release One will feature One on One duels, I think Four Player Free For All, and Mookmatch which is looking good. The next release following soon after will feature a variety of team play modes at it's core. Our coder Nighthawk has just finished the new objective system for WHL. We'll be implimenting it in R2.
3DActionPlanet: What exactly is a Mookmatch?
Springer: Mookmatch is something really in style of Blood Operas. Basically it's a single player or co-op gamemode in which players work through linear levels taking out hordes upon hordes of crappy nameless bad-shot, one-bullet-kill enemys i.e mooks. They keep piling on and players must work alone or together to fight through them to get to an end point. There are other minor variations on the theme.
