Belgium and Romania crashed out of the UEFA European Under-16 Championship at Billingham Synthonia. Romaniaís hopes of staying in the competition were virtually nil, but Belgium needed Spain to take at least a point against Germany, which the Group A winners failed to do.
After a fascinating sequence of events, the fixture was hastily moved from a water-logged Darlington to nearby Billington, Middlesbrough FCís reserve ground. The game itself proved to be a comfortable victory for Belgium, who were far too polished for their opponents.
Jonathan Blondel was Belgiumís outstanding player, while the second goal, from Wouter Vandendriessche after 54 minutes, was a gem following a scintillating three-man move.
Always next year
Kristof Goessens had opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, but it was not to be Belgiumís night, and they like Romania will look to build for next year.
