|Swiss boosted by Tsimba double
Switzerland got the better of Hungary in the contest between the two Group C outsiders in the UEFA European Under-16 Championship at Halifax Town FC’s stadium, The Shay.Penalty opener
Hungary went ahead from the penalty spot in the first half, but Switzerland recovered and two goals from Cédric Tsimba sealed an important three points for Yves Débonnaire’s team.
Hungary were top for much of the first half, with Jozsef Kanta catching the eye in an advanced midfield role. The Swiss meanwhile built well from the back but Tsimba was isolated in attack, and though they had chances they failed to find the target.
Equaliser after the break
It was Kanta who opened the scoring in the 27th minute, converting the spot kick after a foul by Switzerland’s Cédric Gétaz. But the Swiss stepped it up after the break and equalised on 49 minutes when Philippe Senderos helped on a long throw into the area and there was Tsimba to tap the ball home.
This seemed to unnerve the Hungarians and seven minutes later a defensive error led to Switzerland’s second. A misunderstanding between goalkeeper Zoltan Kovacs and full-back Attila Lakatos allowed Tsimba to steal in between them and score into an empty net from 25 metres.
In the end Hungarian finesse gave way to the superior strength of the Swiss, for whom Xavier Margairaz stood out at No10 and the pace of winger Caryl Righetti was always a threat. Defender Phil Haid meanwhile picked up a bad injury which required hospital attention, and Hungary's Attila Laskai was shown the red card after two bookable offences.
