DNF Zone returns

It's been around, it's been at the former Dukeland before it merged with us. And then, with us, until it closed down. And then it ended up popping up as a site in it's own right around various other networks until it disappeared again... To be blunt DNF Zone is back up, looking good and well, being DNF related. News gathered from Totalconversions.com

Cyborg from DukeAmp must have ingested an unhealthy amount of caffeine as he has updated twice today. The first is a review of another new Grabbag mix, and the second is news that Ken "I made BUILD" Silverman has created a nifty WinAmp plugin that plays all his music formats, which you can snag here.

Voodoo used to make Max's guts spill
5/27/01 12:10 PST | Max Payne News |
Cyborg
Voodoo Extreme have placed an interview up with Petri Järvilehto of Remedy Entertainment of their Voodoo Extreme E3 award winner Max Payne.
And it goes a little something like this:
Voodoo Extreme – What is the current status on the game’s progress?

Petri Järvilehto - Right now, we’re close. We are very, very close. We’ve started beta testing the game. It’s all there; all the gameplay. All the maps are done and we are now polishing and tweaking, polishing and tweaking. We are adding more cinematics and get more things out of the combat. But as of now, everything has merged up very nicely. It also depends a lot on 3D Realms. Their feedback is something we value very highly. So we will have to see how that works out, but we are not far.

The World's Great Unsolved Mysteries: no. 45379847
5/26/01 12:45 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Cyborg
I found this whilst exploring a certain part of America, in a certain part of Nevada, which is closely associated with a number that is the same as the number of cards in a pack if you loose the bridge scores card, the jokers, and 10 of clubs. It's a certain file which was sitting next to 'File 34837: JFK' and 'File 34839: Roswell' so obviously I had to pick it up. The dusty relic was secured by 'Them' after the fall of 3D Portal and Dukeworld. However due to the brave efforts of a crack team of internet enabled white middle class males who play too many computer games, the crack unit only known as 'PlanetDuke' have secured these documents.

And now, the truth is out.

The truth on Duke Nukem's nemesis: Dr Proton.

Remember to burn your hard disk after viewing the contents.

This post will self-destruct when it's almost off the front page, right at the bottom where you can't notice it.

Max Payne Preview (E3 2001)
5/25/01 14:52 PST | Max Payne News |
Abe Rahey
PC Zone has put up their preview of Max Payne based on what they saw at this year's E3 event. Here's a snip:

SHORT. BUT SWEET
Sitting back from the action and thinking about Bullet Time for a second, the first thing that occurs is that it may just make the game too easy. When we put this to Petri he let us in on a feature of the game that should put paid to that idea: "Max Payne is the first game to have totally self-adjusting skill levels. There's no longer anything like Easy, Medium and Hard. When you start the game we're constantly monitoring how you are playing and if you're a hardcore gamer then we constantly crank up the skill level giving you a lot more challenging experience."

Max Payne wins Best of E3 Award
5/25/01 14:35 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
Voodoo Extreme has put up their list of what they thought were the top 20 games of E3 as well as their Best of E3 2001 Awards. Winning the Voodoo Extreme Best Action Game of E3 2001 Award is Max Payne by Remedy Entertainment and 3D Realms. Oddly enough I thought Duke Nukem Forever should've won that award! But I believe I am a little biased on that front. DNF did make it into the Top 20, however.

New Grabbag MP3

Abe Rahey
I was just notified by my friend Stelth that the 3D Realms website has been updated with several new MP3s for your enjoyment. One of the MP3s happens to be an updated higher quality version of the Grabbag (theme song to Duke Nukem 3D) by Lee Jackson. Definitely worth downloading, so check it out here.

GOD Gets Offensive GameSpy E3 Award

The crazies over at The 'Spy have dished out their E3 awards - and the Gathering of Developers scooped the "So Going To Hell" award for their Promised Lot, which had pole dancers, Satan's Cheerleaders, and enough random debauchery to secure those guys a firm seat in the hot place ;) Max Payne also won the runner-up action game award, the top spot occupied by impressive war-'em-up Medal of Honor.

George Interviewed On DNF Video
5/25/01 14:08 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Lucky
The boys at Voodoo Extreme have slapped up an interview with George Broussard dealing mostly with the E3 video of Duke Forever we all saw and adored. Here's a short extract:
Voodoo Extreme - I couldn't help but notice that we don't actually see Duke himself in the DNF footage. Why did you decide not to show his DNF look in the game?

George Broussard - He's not modelled yet. In any case I don't think we would have used him. We didn't really want Duke in the video as the whole thing was from his perspective. We even opted not to include any voice clips from Duke. We liked the idea that the video was strong enough to stand on it's own, without Duke. Besides you do see his hands in a few places :) (Editor's Note - and his boot crunching stuff)

Voodoo Extreme - There are a lot of interactive elements shown in the video (the food machine and the pinball game) . What other kinds of interactive elements can we expect in the full version?

George Broussard - We're not really talking about those things as we don't want to ruin everything for the fans. But you saw only a small sample of what's currently in the game, not even counting what's yet to be done.

Nothing much more than the video is covered, but hey, it's a fun read - so check it out here!

DNF - Best of E3
5/25/01 0:10 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
Just received word that the folks at GamersClick.com have awarded Duke Nukem Forever with their Best of E3 - Best in Show award. Here's what they had to say about DNF:

Yeah. Duke's back, baby, and don't you forget it. 3DRealms has been working on this bad boy for years, and at E3, they finally gave the public a little peek into the game. Amazement ensued, and everyone who had previously been shouting, "Vaporware, vaporware" was silenced. The first-person shooter genre is advancing faster than any other, technologically, and DNF is at the top of a very large heap of hot-looking shooters.

3D Realms E3 Pictures
5/23/01 15:01 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
As promised, the folks at 3D Realms have put up their own batch of pictures from this year's E3 event. If you think you've seen everything, well, you really haven't until you've seen these. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead, click here, and enjoy the eye-candy!

This first batch are just the pictures from Joe Siegler and others who had cameras. The second batch, which will come later in the week are from George Broussard. George went mad with his camera, took several thousand pictures, totalling over 4 GIGS of files. It's going to take slightly longer to plow through all of those to pick out what we want to post online.

Thanks to sTalking goat for this err... interesting news on some goings on with Max Payne. Seems some package deliveries are being sent around the country, anyway here's what he had to say:
I work at a UPS hub in downtown ******* (Ed. names changed to protect the innocent). Today to boxes came through the transfer belt with decals featuring Max Payne (the black and red logo of him holding a gun you see on the main page of maxpayne.com) covering the the tops. The were bound for 'Gathering of Developers' an address in Texas (attn: Edward somebody) , and came from 'Interactive Software' an address in on Broadway in downtown New York. Scrawled on the top of both boxes were the words Box of 6, 250 pieces each. The boxes were pretty heavy about 55 lbs and had a kind of plastic rattle if you shook them.

They were probably just decals, but one of the guys I work with thinks it might have been CDs. It probably doesn't mean anything, but I thought you might be interested.
Two boxes of 1500 somethings that rattle, hrrrm. Well if they arrive broken GoD may know why now. Remember we are watching you!

Hype Editorial
5/23/01 4:05 PST | Community News |
Lucky
3D Action Planet has smacked up a new editorial about hype. You know what? Our dear little Duke is mentioned, as well as DooM 3 and, oh yes, Daikatana. Here's a lush piece:
More companies seem to be taking the route of less hype these days; 3D Realms themselves have been incredibly close-guarded over Duke Nukem Forever. Most of the hype has come from the fans of the original. It seems a game that had a successful prequel is almost self-hyping. The fans demand information and obviously, all the game company is going to give them is candy-coated hype.
Go here to check it out before I hype it further! ;)

It's time for Duke to kick some ass, or, perhaps this week, have has ass whupped by a Lightsabre. That's right - it's Duke Vs. Luke, that dude from Star Wars. Who'll win? Vote on the poll on the right!

Last week saw Duke take on Angel, who, rather like myself, wears a long black coat, avoids the sunlight and bites girls' necks. But Duke beat his ass into a frothy pulp. Here's the results, darling:

Duke: 88.5%
Angel: 11.5%
As usual, any ideas can go this way!

DNF Video Article
5/20/01 10:46 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Lucky
Because we love you so (no, not in that way), we've done an article on the E3 video. Even if you've watched it millions of times already - God knows we have - the article will clear up a few things about the video. Here's a quote:
Yes, Duke's main selling point is the interactivity - in the video he pushes buttons on a vending machine to buy a sandwich - and we see a pinball table being played. Who knows what Duke'll be able to do when he walks into a casino? :) We also see The Man riding a variety of vehicles - and even a mule. He interacts with NPCs, too, though that is a standard in any decent FPS games now and isn't too shocking.

More interesting yet is Duke being able to pick things up like an EDF guard's shield and use it for his own defence. Gun turrets also appear in the video - and anything, terrain notwithstanding, can be either used or destroyed. It's not Red Faction - you generally won't be able to blow down walls with your rocket launcher to progress - but any object will be easy to trash.

The article also has an assload of cool captures from the hi-res version, so now there's no excuse not to know all about the Duke video ;) Go read it here!

No Pay, No Play!
5/20/01 20:52 PST | Community News |
Abe Rahey
Taking a break from all this E3 and Duke Nukem Forever goodness, CitizenC & Hellchick have a point/counter-point article up at the 3D Action Planet that deals with the pay-to-play games such as EverQuest, Ultima Online, and Asheron's Call. Here's a snip:

But that's my point: What if you don't want all the new content? I've always been curious about EverQuest (I hear people talking about it all the time) ... but the only thing that is stopping me from buying it is because I don't feel comfortable having to pay more per month for a game. If I want the extra stuff, give me the choice. After I'm done playing through the stock maps, send me a message that says "Woops, you're out of the basic stuff. Do you want more? Only $10." If I enjoyed the game, I am more likely to click "Yes, Give It To Me".
Does the pay-to-play plan actually work? Read about their pros and cons here.

5/18/01 16:12 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
The Duke Nukem Center has put up a brief list of game-information they derived from the DNF E3 video. Here's a snip:

  • Driveable Vehicles are in - Duke is seen driving a motor cycle and what appears to be some sort of hovering vehicle.
  • Lip-Sync is in - Characters move their lips in sync with what they are saying.
  • Interactivity - Duke is seen playing on a pinball machine and interacting with numerous buttons, he also appears to be using a vending machine in one sequence.

3D Realms' Scott Miller just updated his .plan file with word that they will be heading off to E3 tomorrow. He also mentioned that CNN will be covering E3 (as usual) as well as the DNF Video:
The DNF and Max videos will be available on the Internet May 17th, the first day of the E3 show, so for those fans not at the show, we didn't want to leave you out of the fun. Lucky
Just got word from ARUSH Entertainment that they've released details on how the Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project and other "Webisodic" games will be released - by using their GameCapsule system. Here's the dirt:
The patent-pending, non-intrusive GameCapsule acts as a digital "wrapper" for Web video games, offering simplified downloads and installs to consumers and giving them detailed game information, updates and the opportunity to purchase other titles with the click of a button. Users download a game from the Web and can then play it at any time, whether they are connected to the Internet or not.
This means that us poor souls with dial-ups can download installments pretty easily, too ;) Check out the ARUSH site for more!

E3 2001 Talk
5/14/01 16:43 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News |
Abe Rahey
Just noticed over at the Shack that the folks at Wired News have put up an article about E3 (which takes place in a few days). Apparently, according to them, the Microsoft XBox will steal the show. Well, we'll see about that! Here's what they said regarding Duke:
This will be the grand coming out party for Duke Nukem Forever; and its developer, 3D Realms, is counting on maximum attention. "I think Duke and Max Payne will garner more than their share of positive attention, and I hope that Doom 3 doesn't make an appearance. It would steal the show," said 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller.

Duke On GameCube, Gameboy Advance

Lucky
Spotted at VoodooExtreme that Take 2 Interactive (European publishers of Duke Forever) have put forward this press release on DNF appearing on the GameCube and a Duke game for the Gameboy Advance:
Titles for NINTENDO GAMECUBE include Duke Nukem Forever, the highly anticipated sequel to the PC blockbuster Duke Nukem 3D from game developer 3D Realms. Take-Two also intends to develop a title based on the Duke Nukem franchise for release on the Game Boy Advance. Titles based on the franchise will be published by the Rockstar Games label.

Duke Nukem products have sold more than $120 million worldwide since the launch of Duke Nukem 3D in 1995, making Duke Nukem one of the most commercially successful product franchises in gaming history.

``Take-Two is extremely excited to bring the popular Duke Nukem franchise to the next-generation hardware systems from Nintendo,'' said Kelly Sumner, Chief Executive Officer. ``The new high-performance hardware systems and Duke Nukem's overwhelming appeal will make for an explosive combination.''

Duke Forever E3 Video

3D Realms webmaster Joe Siegler cleared up a few things over the new E3 video's distribution, next Thursday no less, in this forum thread:
There will be four files available - they all contain the same content, but they're different formats and sizes. There will be two (one high quality, one low quality) Bink video files, and two Quicktime video files (one HQ, one LQ). The High quality files are around 43Mb each, and the lower quality bink is about 15, and the lower quality Quicktime is around 23Mb.
Note that you shouldn't need any additional utilities to run the Bink files should you choose to download them. We'll slap up a list of download links here as soon as the files are available, natch :)

Duke is Evil!

Well after several hours of sweaty toil at the grindstone I've managed to get a final tally of results from last weeks poll! Okay, well I just clicked the results button but it hurt all the same. Last weeks question "Do you think Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project will be a success?" gave a suprising result, most of you don't know what it is! Thankfully of those who do understand English (we covered it during the last week) or weren't clicking randomly, seem to think a bit of episodic Dukeness would be cool.
Do you think Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project will be a success?

No - 11.9%
Err... what? - 58%
Duke is a good guy, well he saves the world anyway. But what if he were truely evil, what would Duke want to do most with his evilness? Vote in this weeks poll; If Duke were evil his aim would be...

Joe Siegler : The Return

Cyborg
You may remember that a little while ago Joe Siegler was interviewed by Euniverse Live. You may even remember that it was only part 1 of 2. Well now you can get your grubby mitts on part deux and get the full lowdown on 3D Realms' webmaster.
Just don't expect any DNF game secrets and you won't be too disappointed.

ARUSH Interview

Cyborg
ARUSH Entertainment, the guys doing the Duke Nukem episodic game, have recently had an interview with the guys at Stomped:
Finally, it looks like there is the potential for a lot of Duke Nukem games coming out in the next 12 months or so (Duke Nukem Forever, Duke Nukem PS2, Duke Nukem: Endangered Species). Is there pressure to make Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project a game that will be able to stand up to the quality that the other Duke games are striving for?

First and foremost, we want to make this an extremely fun game to play, as well as make it very visually appealing. Although it will not be a 700 MB game, it will amaze you to find out how suberbly crafted it will be and still be sized for a convenient downloaded. We want to woo back casual gamers while extending our hand to core Duke fans; it is not an easy task to undertake, but quality and gameplay are not sacrificed. Neither 3D Realms nor ARUSH would have it any other way.
And don't forget to read our interview too! (Don't mind this, I'm trying to beat Lucky at ridiculously long links).

Noticed on Voodoo Extreme.
