 Shmup Competition!Update by: William
Shmups MK2 has announced an exciting new competition! It seems that back in the good old Commodore/Amiga days, a piece of useful software called Shoot'em-Up Construction Kit allowed aspiring game designers to easily build their own shmups. The results were usually rather simple, but done right, they could be very fun. This gave the fellows at Shmups an idea: why not hold a contest to see who could build the better shmup? Entries will be accepted in both 8- and 16-bit categories. Head on over to Shmups MK2 and click on "Competitions" in the left-hand menu for the full details. And good luck!

 Megadrive AdditionsUpdate by: William
Paul over at Japanese Gaming informs me that he has added several new Megadrive and Mega CD game entries to his site. Check it out!

 Shmupdate!Update by: William
The fourth birthday of Shmups MK2 was yesterday, but that doesn't mean they they took the day off, oh no. In addition to the SEUCK contest (see above news post), Shmups has three new reviews and two new Hiscore Challenges for your enjoyment:
New Reviews:
  • Space Tripper (PC)
  • Cloud Master (Master System)
  • Sexy Parodius (Saturn)
  • New Hiscore Challenges:
  • Dangun Feveron (Arcade)
  • Baroque Shooting Time Attack (PC)
  • So it may be Shmups' birthday celebration, but you get the presents! Happy Birthday, Shmups!

     Mailbag!Update by: William
Mailbag is back from last week's E3-imposed hiatus! It's still Shmups Week, and Mailbag, much like a faithful Gradius Option, is right there firing at aliens beside us. Check it out for reader thoughts on shmups, feedback on Shmups Week, and a lot of people defending Radiant Silvergun.

Next Week: The horrible spectre of 3D classic game remakes rears its ugly head once again. Is there a better way for publishers to support their classic franchises? Mail us with your thoughts.

Not So Radiant SilvergunUpdate by: William
The arcade game Radiant Silvergun (and its Sega Saturn conversion) is often called the best shoot'em-up of all time. Along with the word "best," you'll frequently find other glowing terms applied to this game, such as "most original," and "most innovative." In other words, Radiant Silvergun is the king of shmups.

Waiting for "but"... It's coming... Aha, here it is!

...BUT, not every shmup fan would agree. Could it be possible that Radiant Silvergun is just the lucky recipient of too much hype? Felix the Cat from Shmups thinks so, and he tries to convince you that Radiant Silvergun is overhyped in this Shmups Week editorial.

Pong Gets With the ProgramUpdate by: William
Get With the Program, an online comic hosted at GameSpy.com, is celebrating its 100th strip with a special storyline that will be of interest to classic gamers. I don't want to give too much away, but the story revolves around Pong, and video game history. What are you waiting for? Get With the Program!

     Spotlight on ShmupsUpdate by: William
What is a SHMUP? Well, I'd hope you know by now. But who exactly are those guys over at Shmups MK2, where did the site come from, and how has it managed to stick around these many years? In what may be the lengthiest hosted site Spotlight ever to appear on GameSpy.com, Akira, Malc, and Felix reveal all, including their feelings on Axelay. Enjoy!
