A pub in Oldham town centre has been attacked this evening. The Jolly Carter on Lees Road was bombarded with bricks by 30-40 people who had been fighting among each other outside. A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said they received reports of people fighting at around 4.30pm. The mob then turned on the pub, trapping people inside. Police quickly dispersed the troublemakers to allow those inside the pub to leave. Several windows were smashed but calm was restored in the area. The landlady of the Jolly Carter says incident was "very frightening" and she fears more trouble later. "The pub was quite busy, with kids in, as always on a Sunday afternoon," said Zoe Williamson, 21. "There were Asians outside who started throwing bricks through the windows. A few people were hit by flying glass but no-one was badly hurt. We've heard some Asians have been saying they will come back later and finish the job. "It's too frightening to stay here tonight and though the pub is open my partner and I and the two babies will stay somewhere else." Ms Williamson lives at the pub with partner Terry English, 45 and children Alitia, two, and Sophie, 11 months. Last updated: 18:46 Sunday 27th May 2001 RELATED STORIES:
