THE TRUE STORY

Canadians land at Juno beach on D-Day and encounter light resistance. But the next day they meet their nemesis the 12th SS. On June 8th the 12th SS carry out their 2nd execution of captured Canadian POW's. By June 11, 1017 Canadians have been killed in action & 1814 wounded in the D-Day landings and engagements at Authie & Putot-en-Basin and the Caen area.

On July 4, the battle to finally take all of Caen and the surrounding area commences. After a massive air bombardment on July 7, the 1st British Corps & 3rd Canadian Division succeed in taking the Northern part of Caen, with heavy casualties.

Operation Goodwood/Atlantic - attack to secure Vaucelles & Colombelles and the rest of Caen. the next day later the Balck Watch cross the Orne River and advance to the edge of Verrières Ridge. The following afternoon night in heavy rain, the Germans counterattack and 2 companies of Fusiliers Mont-Royal are virtually wiped out. Operation Goodwood/Atlantic is a failure.

Montgomery orders the Canadians to launch an attack to trap the retreating German armour. Canadian General Guy Simonds launches Operation Totalize and uses artificial moonlight and armoured personnel carriers. Operation Totalize fails.

Simonds plans and mounts Operation Tractable to close the Falaise Gap. The Operation succeeds but takes too long to complete and much of the German forces escape to fight again in Holland. against the Allies.
