Jarvis Family

First Generation:

James Jarvis married Sarah Kelly sometime before 1757. Very little has been found to tell us about their early lives in Maryland, but we do know James Jarvis leased Quince Orchard in Frederick County, MD in 1770 from Henry Clagett. Mr. Claggett's Will mentions "Widow Jarvis" still living on the same tract of land in 1777. All of the children migrated to Rowan County, NC in 1781 and settled near Mudddy Creek next to the Wachovia tract. James and Susannah stayed and lived their lives in Hope (present-day Forsyth) but their brothers and sister migrated to South Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan.

It appears from the 1790 Rowan County Census records that James Jarvis was married before he moved to North Carolina in 1781. His household in 1790 included (James, Head of Household, 16+), and 2 females including head of family. The other female could be his sister Margaret or it could be that James had a daughter by 1790.

The 1790 Rowan County Census:
Elijah Jarvis is listed with 1 male 16+; 1 male under 16; and 3 females including head of family.
James Jarvis is listed with 1 male 16+ and 2 females including head of family.
