Miss Carroll's Class

Poetry

For a recent computer room project, Miss Carroll's class wrote and published poetry.  With Mrs. Degnan's assistance, we worked on two kinds of poems: cinquains and sensory poems.  Both are very structured, each follows a very specific pattern.

CINQUAIN ('sing kane'):  A cinquain is a five line poem.

                Line 1 - A noun
Line 2 - Two adjectives describing the noun.
Line 3 - Three 'ing' words
                Line 4 - Four words
Line 5 - One word similar in meaning to the word in Line 1

ANGER

ANGER

Anger is black.

Anger is black.

It sounds like people yelling at you.

It sounds like thunder and lightning.

It smells like rotten cheese.

It smells like houses burning.

It tastes like a flavor you always hated.

It tastes like a red hot fire ball.

It looks like black rumbling clouds.

It looks like a big flame of hot gas.

Anger feels like yelling, screaming, and kicking.

Anger feels like glass shattering.

HAPPINESS

HAPPINESS

Happiness is red.

Happiness is gold.

It sounds like people clapping.

It sounds like hearts pounding.

It smells like pizza.

It smells like red roses.

It tastes like a juicy apple.

It tastes like candy hearts.

It looks like a puppy.

It looks like a baby's red cheeks.

Happiness feels like a big hug.

Happiness is like loving someone.

SURPRISE

SURPRISE

Surprise is pink.

Surprise is bright red.

It sounds like a present.

It sounds like a present unwrapping.

It smells like pink and white flowers.

It smells like roses.

It tastes like cake.

It tastes like cupcakes.

It looks like a little girl with rosy cheeks.

It looks like a very pretty face.

 Surprise is a child.

Surprise is a bouquet of flowers.
