Sites related to the history of theatre in Britain (primarily) and the history of theatre in general, in so far as it has affected theatre in the UK.
Aeschylus
Part of About.com's Ancient History site: a single page which makes a very good introduction to Aeschylus' work. Facts and figures, how the plays were performed, a brief biography and lots more.
Ancient Greek Theatre
A useful intro with a great deal of information. The author is Greek and is writing in English, so visitors will have to excuse the slightly odd language every now and again! Well worth a visit for the amont of information available.
Ancient Theatre
Going back a thousand years before Shakespeare we have the Greeks, who began it all! This page is a brief, easy to follow introduction to classical theatre. A site about classical theatre sounds pretty dry and uninteresting, but this is very nicely put together and really quite fascinating.
Antonin Artaud
French, of course, but a writer who has exerted considerable influence over theatre internationally. There's a bibliography, some photos, and some extracts from his poetry and prose works.
Sarah Bernhardt
A brief outline (one page) of the life and career of this Victorian actress. Some pics, and a few links to contemporary photos of Paris.
Sarah Bernhardt
A picture.
Sarah Bernardt
Contains a list of the plays and roles she appeared in, plus the date of first performances, from 1858 to 1922. Some plays have their own pages, most of which are very short and are, basically, footnotes, although there is the occasional illustration. There are also details of the moving pictures she made and a bibliography. More is promised in the near future.
Sarah Bernhardt (Women in Theatre site)
An intro and bibliography.
Child Actors
Devoted to the Elizabethan companies of child actors (such as the Children of the Chapel Royal) that provided a lot of competition for the adult companies.
Commedia dell'Arte
The Commedia had a great influence on many aspects of British theatre, so it well deserves its place here. Ths is a very useful site: although described as a basic introduction, it is very thorough, at least as far as the non-specialist is concerned.
