So I get all these e-mails from Nasty Little Man PR forwarded to me from bryce@popped. Seems like mom is well on her way to being placed on that most revered and coveted shit list of this whole fucking summer--the Vans Warped Tour media list! Coming at her complete with complimentary ticket and press pass! That is if she wants to interview and write articles on Rancid, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Deftones, MXPX, and Less Than Jake. Um, okay kids, but this is starting to sound a lot like work to me, and hey, let's face it, if I wanted 'real' work, I'd find myself a 'real' job, 'real' fast. You know the 'real' kind that pays 'real' money. But who among us music junkies can resist backstage passes? Certainly not my teen-age daughter (Ra) and I who lust after these 'permits to paradise' like half-crazed crack addicts seeking their next hit. When it comes to music, we just can't say no.

"Yeah, sure. What? Are you kidding? I'd love it." And so began another incredibly bizarre adventure in the ordinary life of an average American mother and her teenage daughter. And why not go for it, right? As I already know so much about these bands (Ah, Ra? Don't you have a Less Than Jake CD or something? Aren't they kind of ska punk like Reel Big Fish or something? MXPX... um, weren't they once upon a time (gasp!) a Xian band on Tooth and Nail label? Shouldn't they be playing at The Cornerstone Festival? So how the hell do they end up doing the Warped?) Hey, this should be a real cinch, right? And I've even actually seen VGS when they were in Pittsburgh with The Offspring last fall, and I saw The Deftones at the X FEST this past May. No problem.

Okay, so let's get real here people. I'm not a music critic. What I know about music amounts to knowing what I like and what I don't, and I have never done a band interview in my whole freakin' life. But I do go to a lot of punk shows with my daughter and write about them, and we do have tickets for both Warped Pittsburgh and Warped Toronto. Why both? Why not? Last summer my daughter missed the Pittsburgh Warped because we were in Toronto, and so I, being "the coolest mom in the universe" (HA! ha! very funny guys), this summer made plans so she could go to both. This way, she not only gets to go to two Warped's, she also gets to meet her fellow online Offspring fans who live in Toronto, some of whom (unbeknownst to us at the time) were also at The Warehouse when The Offspring played there last summer.   »»»
