I’ve added Thomas Barnham/Mary Feake to this page to clarify some misinformation that is floating around—mainly by way of the LDS Ancestral File. It lists a Mary Feake as Thomas Barnum’s (1625-1695) wife. From time to time, I get queries about "our" Thomas’ wife, Mary Feake.
There was a Thomas Barnham (abt. 1542-d. ca. 1614) who married a Mary Feake. He married Mary Feake in London ca. 1595. She was the daughter of William Feake and Mary Wetherell. Thomas is mentioned in his father-in-law’s will and a brief mention in Mary WETHERELL Feake’s will. You can find copies of their wills in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. XLVII, 1893, pps. 516-518. William Feake died in London, May 1595. His wife, Mary, died 1619 in London.
Ann Tappero, another Barnum researcher, sent me the following information from Genealogies of Long Island Families, vol.1, Albertson-Polhemius FHL Book 974.721 D2g vol.1 "Mary, b. ca. 1565, aet.49+ in 1614, obviously not born before summer of 1565 as her parents married Nov 12 1564. She wrongly appears as seventh child in the 1623 pedigree. Before May 7, 1595, she m. Thomas Barneham (d. ca. 1614, [Inq.p.m., 1814]), eldest child of Thomas Barneham (d. ca. Apr 1, 1576) by wife Alice Cressey of London; grandson of Francis Barneham, Sheriff of London, by wife Alice Bradbridge; great-grandson of Stephen Barneham of Southwick, co. Southampton. (See Harleian Society 42:168 f.; 54:8; 64:150; The Ancestor 9:191-209, and an article in preparation by John Insley Coddington.) At an inquest post mortem (vol. 412, no. 9, 17 Feb. [II], James I-1613/14), held at Stratford Langthorne [co. Essex] before William Smyth [her brother-in-law?], "Mary Barnham, widow, lunatic, enjoys lucid intervals, say Geoffrey Thurgad[?], William Pullyn, Tobias Dixon [later her niece's husband], John Silvester, Wm. Feake, etc. She is incapable of managing her lands. Fifteen years ago she was capax eruditionis (able to grasp instruction). William Feake is her brother and next heir, and she is aet. 49 and more." She was still living in 1619 and still a lunatic when her mother made her will. Her only child Isaac was baptised at St. Botolph's Bishopsgate, Nov. 19, 1595, but died before 1614."
In my research, I have Thomas Barnham (b. about 1542 m. Mary Feake), son of Thomas Barnham and Alice Cressey, grandson of Stephen Barnham and __________Blewett. According to the above text, he was the grandson of Francis and the great-grandson of Stephen. However, Stephen was the father of Francis, Thomas and four daughters according to Visitation records. Ann has a different take on this Thomas' line: Stephen, Thomas, Francis, Thomas. I don't want to spend a lot of time on this connection, only to say that this Thomas and Mary aren't the Connecticut Barnums who who helped found Danbury.
