UNIT LESSON PLAN:   Five Senses Part 1
SUBJECT:            Science/Writing
GRADE:              Second through Fifth
Overview:

This is a four part lesson that will allow the students to learn and explore our five senses.

Objective:

To increase students awareness of our senses.

Materials/Resources:

"A Light in the Attic" by Shel Silverstein,

Activity:

Day 1

  • Ask
    - Can anyone tell me what they think the five senses are? (Make a list of their predictions on the board)
    - What do we use our five senses for? (Listen for ideas and discuss)

  • Introduce
    Shel Silverstein book and read poem "Senses" (p. 134)
  • Discuss poem
    • What senses are mentioned?
    • What are some problems with this poem?
    • Can an ear talk? Why? or Why not?
    • Can an eye and a nose hear?
    • In reality to hear a converstaion and respond what senses do we need?
  • Read poem "Squishy Touch" (p.53)
  • Discuss poem
    • What senses are mentioned here?
    • What is the main sense mentioned?
    • Is this poem realistic?
  • Closing
    Have the students take a piece of paper and tell how these two poems are similar? Explain what their five senses are and how they think they might work in our body.
