Jane Curtin

Jane Curtin enjoys a record held only by Lucille Ball - she's starred in different hit TV shows in three decades. And not even Lucy, virtually a genre unto herself, can boast that each one appealed to different audiences, as Curtin's have done.

She was hardbitten, cynical and smart back in the '70s, when Saturday Night Live was the hippest thing on television. In the '80s, she reinvented herself as a warm and lovable divorcée struggling through life's vicissitudes on Kate & Allie. As Dr. Albright she's simultaneously wacky, pompous and endearing amid the loopy proceedings of her current success, 3rd Rock From the Sun.

Curtin is a rarity - a funny star who can slip completely into a character and serve the material, not just play off her persona.
