Martha Skinner, Owen Graduate School of Management

Age: 28
Specialties: E-commerce, operations
Hometown: Falls Church, Va.
Other degrees: B.A., sociology and French, University of Virginia
Nonwork interests: Mentoring youth, rollerblading

After five years as an analyst with aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin, Martha Skinner decided to hitch a ride on the Internet rocket. Skinner is president of the e-commerce club at the Owen School in Nashville, Tenn. Last summer she helped take Pitney Bowes' escrow system online, and after graduation she plans to work at Citibank in the e-Citi management program, where she'll develop online payment systems. "Martha embodies the entrepreneurial spirit of Owen," says professor Donna Hoffman. "She's the definition of a team player."

Skinner couldn't have picked a place more hooked into the Internet. While some business schools have only recently integrated the Net into their curriculum, it's been more than seven years since professors Hoffman and Tom Novak started Project 2000, a research center that studies online behavior and e-commerce marketing. Renamed the eLab in 1999, the center lets MBA students far from Silicon Valley bathe in e-commerce business models. Student interest in high-tech doesn't end at commencement: Almost 35 percent of Owen grads take jobs in the industry.

Average salary pre-MBA at Owen: $53,624
Average salary post-MBA at Owen: $103,873

Correction:
A previous version of this story incorrectly reported the average salary for new graduates of Vanderbilt's Owen School of Management. The amount is $103,873.
