Paul Allen founded "Micro-soft" in 1975 with high school buddy Bill Gates, serving as executive VP of research and new product development until stepping down in 1983 following a serious illness. Today, Paul retains a board seat at Microsoft - he is its second-largest stockholder - and operates his own angel investment firm, Vulcan Ventures. Among the many companies that he's invested in is Charter Communications, the nation's fourth-largest cable operator, which received nearly $6 billion from Paul. He also operates six charitable foundations and plays the guitar in Grown Men, a rock band.
