Troyes Aube Champagne FC marched into the third round of the UEFA Intertoto Cup on Sunday by holding FC WIT Georgia Tbilisi to a 1-1 draw at the Boris Paichadze stadium, Tbilisi. The French side held a six-goal advantage from the first leg and now face Swedish club AIK Solna in the next round.
Alexandr Gogoberishvili, who missed the opening game in France, was back for the return match and proved a constant threat to the visitors' defence. He came close to scoring after just two minutes but drove narrowly wide of the post.
Troyes enjoyed plenty of possession early on, but FC WIT had most of the chances, Giorgi Adamia and Levan Melkadze both going close. The French side's best chance of the first period came on 35 minutes when Algerian forward Farid Ghazi was put clean through, but he failed to beat goalkeeper Mirza Merlani.
Goussé on target
WIT substitute Zurab Metreveli looked lively in the second half and, just past the hour, set up Gogoberishvili, whose shot hit the post. The Georgians were punished for their wayward finishing nine minutes from time when, against the run of play, Nicolas Goussé kept his cool to score from close range.
WIT were not to be denied, though, and salvaged pride when captain George Tchankotadze dribbled past three players before teeing-up Melkadze who made it 1-1.
