Homespun Baby Afghan

Pattern suggestion from Kathy Howard: "I do have one suggestion .....You might make mention in there that people should try marking the first and last stitch of the row on the decrease side until they get used to it." Good idea! Thanks, Kathy! If you find it difficult to identify the first and last stitches on rows 31-60, you might like to mark the stitches with a yarn marker or safety pin.

Materials: About 15 ounces of Lion Brand Homespun

Crochet hook size N

Gauge: Rows 1-3 = 2”; row 3 measures about 3” across

Finished size: About 32” across

Note: This afghan is worked diagonally, starting in one corner and finishing

in the opposite corner of the square.

Starting at one corner of the afghan, ch 2

Row 1: (Sc, dc, sc) in the 2nd ch from hook; ch 1, turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: (Hdc, dc) in the first sc, sc in the next dc, (dc, hdc) in the last sc; ch

1, turn. (5 sts)

Row 3: (Hdc, dc) in the first hdc, (sc in each dc and dc in each sc) across,

(dc, hdc) in the last hdc; ch 1, turn. (7 sts)

Rows 4-30: Repeat row 3. There should be 61 stitches at the end of row 30.

Row 31: Hdc decrease over the first 2 sts (to work hdc decrease - yo, insert

hook in first st and pull up a loop, yo, insert hook in next st and pull up a

loop, yo and pull through all 5 remaining loops on hook); (sc in each dc and

dc in each sc) across to within the last 2 sts; hdc decrease over the last 2

sts; ch 1, turn. (23 sts)

Rows 32-59: Repeat row 31. There should be 3 stitches at the end of row

59.

Row 60: Insert hook in first st and pull up a loop, (insert hook in next st

and pull up a loop) 2 times; yo and pull through all 4 remaining loops on

hook. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Edging

Round 1: Attach hook with a sl st in any corner, ch 1, 3 sc in joining. Sc

evenly around the afghan, working 45 sc along each side and 3 sc in each

corner. End with 1 sc in the same st as the first 2 sc to complete corner;

join with a sl st to the first sc. (192 sc)

Round 2: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, work 3 more dc in the same st,

*(skip next sc, sc in the next sc, skip next sc, 5 dc shell in the next sc) 11

times, skip next sc, sc in the next sc, skip next sc, 7 dc shell in the next sc

for the corner.* Repeat from * to * 2 times; (skip next sc, sc in the next sc,

skip next sc, 5 dc shell in the next sc) 11 times, skip next sc, sc in the next

sc, skip next sc, work 3 dc in the same st as beginning to finish corner; join

with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.

Round 3: Sl st into the space between the ch 3 and the first dc, ch 2, sl st

in the space between the the first and second dc, ch 2, sl st in the space

between the second and third dc’s, *(slip st in the space between the first ,

two dc’s of the next shell, ch 2, sl st in the next space between dc’s in the

same shell, ch 3, sl st in the next space between dc’s in the same shell, ch

2, sl st in the next space between dc’s in the same shell) 11 times; slip st in

the space between the first, two dc’s of the next shell, (ch 2, sl st in the

next space between dc’s in the same shell) 2 times, ch 3, sl st in the next

space between dc’s in the same shell, (ch 2, sl st in the next space between

dc’s in the same shell) 2 times.* Repeat from * to * 2 times; (slip st in the

space between the first , two dc’s of the next shell, ch 2, sl st in the next

space between dc’s in the same shell, ch 3, sl st in the next space between

dc’s in the same shell, ch 2, sl st in the next space between dc’s in the

same shell) 11 times; slip st in the space between the first, two dc’s of the

next shell, (ch 2, sl st in the next space between dc’s in the same shell) 2

times, ch 3, join with a sl st to the first sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
