| Gambit Records currently has just one band, The Movies. Their music is a
blend of folk/rock/pop. Their first CD, "Nothin's On Its Way" was
released in October of '96. They have just finished recording a second
album, which although it likely won't be released for a while yet, will be
well worth a listen based on their amazing first album. (May 1997) |
| Gang of Hair Records |
| PO Box 223 Selma CA 93662 |
| Begun in June '92. Have put only a few CDs about, but very quality stuff. Check out Slim the Drifter; best cover of Hank Williams since Patsy Cline. |

variety of musical genres. They currently have two artists scheduled for

to their roster! (April 1997) |
| Get Hip |
| P.O. Box 666 Canonsburg PA 15317 |
| Home of the Cynics, and one of the oldest Pittsburgh labels. Also releases stuff from Pink Slip Daddy, Motherfucker 666, and many more -typically garage oriented. |
| Giorno Poetry Systems |
| 222 Bowery New York NY 10012 |
| I think ESD is re-issuing a lot of this stuff, and that's good. John Giorno is a NYC poet who has lots of neat friends - Laurie Anderson, William S. Burroughs - and together, they made a bunch of excellent spoken word LPs in the late 70s and early 80s. These people were also responsible for the "Dial-A-Poem" phone service in New York for many years. Wild stuff, not always suitable for young audiences, but always interesting. |
| Girlie Music Records |
| 40 Fountainhead Rd. Apt. 1513 Toronto ON M3J 2V1 Canada |
| Started by (and so far including only) Cindy, a Toronto based band into the likes of Mystery Machine. |
| GO! Discs |
| 72 Black Lion Lane Hammersmith London W6 9BE |
| This label spawned the happy jangly sound of the 80's. Billy Bragg and
The Housemartins were highlights that sent the label to the independent
charts. The creative in the head office was all seen on most of the
Housemartins' record as "Better music since 1987" was seen near
the label's logo. The music genre of Go! Disc! has continued into the 90's
with bands like The La's, Frank and Walters, Trash Can Sinatras and many
other happy popsters.
Lately, GO has become a subsidiary of Chrysalis and is now distributed by BMG and EMI, so maybe they aren't 'independent' anymore. (Steve) |

| Phone: (412) 438-0201 |

Joel'. He's a comic/ musician with a bit of bent towards country music. His
album 'You Can't Love Me Like My Dog' has songs like 'Puff the Magic Drag
Queen', 'Why Don't We All Go On Welfare', and 'BIG HAIR'. Apparently this
release has been doing fairly well in Pennsylvania...if it's what you might
be into...check him out! (September 1997) |

Overwhelming Colorfast, Cars Get Crushed, Spanakorzo, Supernova, Servotron,
the Faction, No Knife, Chinchilla, Big Drill Car, Hemlock, Dodgeball, etc. A
wide variety of music with originality and creativity, and some level of
"punk" thrown in. (February 1997) |

| Phone: (901) 725-3924 |
| Fax: (901) 274-1916 |
| Masters of the trash rock sound. Eric Oblivian (owner and founder of Goner) has put out some great quality recordings by bands like King Louie, Guitar Wolf and others. The Guitar Wolf LP has absolutely no audio fidelity, but rocks in a big way, baby! Be on the lookout for a live Oblivians LP (on Goner) which will be released in time for their European tour. |

| Grand Royal |
| P.O. Box 26689 - Dept CRC Los Angeles CA 90026 |
| The Beastie Boys very own record label. As such I'm not entirely sure it warrants inclusion in the list but whatever ... Apart from the Beastie Boys the label has released stuff by Luscious Jackson, Ween and the rather wonderful Noise Addict. Ben Lee from Noise Addict was of course the hippest 12 year old on the planet, but that was back in 1993, things change. |
| Grass Records |
| Another Dutch East India label. Releases include Old Man, Stigmata a go-go, The Wrens, Brainiac, Mousetrap, and Pencil. |
| Green Gecko Records |
|
C/O Matt Palmer 6 Mink Drive Hanover NH 03755 USA |
| A record label run by a couple of friends. They want to put out Punk rock
and indie bands if they ever get enough money to do a CD. Otherwise they're
going to try to do just tapes. They are planning a release from a band
called Who Shot Mr. Burns? and another from a unnamed band possible Pure when
they finish doing a demo tape. These guys are 17 and they have no experience
in the industry but are hoping ir will take off and they can put some CDs
and 7"s out. (March 1998) |
| Gritty Kitty |
| P.O. Box 5145 Bellingham WA 98227 |
| Best release I've seen has been a Crayon/Grover split single, but they've also done singles with Weehuggum and The Meek, and a CD comp of Bellingham bands. |
| Grouse Records |
| 1507 E 53rd St. #249 Chicago IL 60615 |
| Right now, Grouse is in the business of releasing Chicago area bands like
Streganona, Tart, Griptongue, John Huss and others. In the very near future
however, they will be diversifying themselves into the electronic music, and
also beginning to deal with world music artists from China, Taiwan, and
Latin America. (June 1996) |
