Advanced-Design AC Passenger Locomotive Delivers High Performance from Diesel and from Third Rail Power

GE Transportation Systems' new advanced-design dual mode passenger locomotive is strikingly contemporary in styling and packed with advanced technology specifically designed for reliable, high-speed passenger service on Amtrak's system.  The P32AC-DM operates in diesel or third rail power and delivers unsurpassed performance in either mode.  It can quickly accelerate five Amfleet cars to over 110 mph in diesel mode and to over 60 mph when operating on third rail mode in New York City tunnels.

Built-in redundancy with special emphasis on the design of the Head End Power system enhances mission reliability.  For example, with GE's innovative air-cooled, inverter-per-motor AC propulsion system, the #1 traction inverter provides automatic back-up to the HEP inverter.  In the back-up mode, the locomotive will continue to operate at full-rated horsepower.

The system computers automatically control the transition between power modes.  This transition is "seamless" and provides uninterrupted hotel power to the train.  Power for lighting, air conditioning, heating and other train services remains "on" during the transition to provide passenger comfort and security.
